Michael Carrick’s time at Manchester United is coming to an end.
Reports following a three-nil defeat at the hands of AFC Bournemouth at Old Trafford suggest that the Red Devils will pull the plug on the club legend’s time in charge.
It’s been a saddening turn of events.
United are experiencing a terrible start to the 2026/27 league campaign – their worst in 40 years.
Just one Premier League win has come, against Ipswich Town, and some players have gone out of their way to make their unhappiness known.
Captain Bruno Fernandes was dropped on Sunday for comments in the media about Carrick’s tactics, while centre-back Lisandro Martinez received no footballing punishment for his remarks about club hierarchy.
The season has been nothing short of disaster so far, and United need to save it. That involves a brand new managerial appointment, even whilst issues clearly lie deeper inside the football club.
Carrick’s sacking could be made easier for Manchester United, however.
The Red Devils boss is “believed to have a break clause” in his contract, according to talkSPORT.
A break clause usually entails a pre-agreed provision that lets either the club or the individual end a contract early without paying out its full remaining value. It could mean sacking Carrick isn’t as financially burdening as it would be otherwise.
Carrick clearly signed his contract knowing this was in place, so he likely won’t be surprised that a sacking is coming his way following poor form.
Break clauses are unusual for Manchester United managers to have, given the lucrative contracts handed out at Old Trafford, but Carrick was always punching above his weight with the job.
The chances of the next boss at the helm having a similar clause in place feels unrealistic. United need to get their next one right, amid growing unrest within the fanbase.
