John Obi Mikel believes that Chelsea already have a young centre-back who has the potential to become a top-level player.
It’s been interesting to see how the backline has evolved under Enzo Maresca. There are some talented players in the mix, but it’s still an area that needs attention if they’re going to push on.
Marc Cucurella, who’s put together a really consistent season at left-back, recently said Chelsea need to stop conceding soft goals.
Levi Colwill hasn’t featured for Chelsea this season, sidelined by a long-term injury suffered on the opening day of pre-season. His ACL problem means fans will have to wait a bit longer before he returns to action.
Despite the setback, John Obi Mikel believes the 22-year-old has the potential to reach world-class status once he’s fully recovered.
Mikel told talkSPORT (8 October): “Levi Colwill. I think he’s fantastic. I think he has the potential to become a world class defender. He’s not there yet, but I think he has the potential. We need somebody who’s going to come in a top centre back who’s going to partner him.”
Colwill had an impressive 2024-25 season at Chelsea, emerging as their best centre-half. The timing of his injury was particularly tough, with the World Cup coming up in 2026.
According to Wesley Fofana, Colwill remains upbeat around the training ground despite his ongoing recovery.
We’re with Mikel on this one – Colwill looks like he has what it takes to become top-tier talent – though patience will be needed as he works his way back.
Cole Palmer, a Chelsea forward, predicted Colwill’s rise back in October 2023. He told the BBC: “I think he can go to the very top. He’s got every single attribute that you want in a centre-back and he’s humble.”
Colwill has long been recognised as an ideal fit for the modern game. His ability on the ball and his composure under pressure set him apart, while his physical attributes have only improved over time.

The recent injury setback is unfortunate for Colwill, but there’s little doubt he’ll return determined to fulfil his potential.
