Longtime Loons center back Michael Boxall has been named to his first MLS All-Star team. He will be joined goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair, who earns his second All-Star nod.

Boxall and St. Clair have been central figures in Minnesota United's defense that has been among the league's best all season. St. Clair is currently away from the team on international duty, staring for the Canadian men's national team in the Gold Cup. Boxall, 36, is the club's longest tenured player, having joined the team in 2017.

With Boxall in the middle of a center back trio, Minnesota United have allowed the fourth fewest goals (20) this season, while conceding the 13th most shots (226) in the league, according to American Soccer Analysis. St. Clair is currently tied for the league lead in clean sheets (8).

Individually, Boxall's defensive numbers are among the top in the league. His 117 clearances is fifth in the league, while he has committed zero errors that have led to opponents shots, according to FBref. Boxall is fourth on the team in minutes played (1,350) in 15 appearances. He's also registered one goal and one assist for the third-place Loons.

Boxall is the club's fourth All-Star since joining the league in 2017. Emmanuel Reynoso earned two All-Star nods in 2021 and 2022. St. Clair earned his first All-Star nod in 2022, when the All-Star Game was held at Allianz Field, of which he won the MVP award. Robin Lod is the most recent Loons All-Star, having made the 2024 game.

The MLS All-Star Game will be played July 23 in Austin, Texas, at Q2 Stadium. A team of MLS All-Stars will play against a team of All-Stars from Mexico's LigaMX. Kickoff for the game is set for 8 p.m. CT on AppleTV.

Manchester United's Ruben Amorim addresses his controversial comments from Grimbsy loss

It's been two days since Manchester United were shockingly eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Grimsby Town. Ruben Amorim's team lost 12-11 on penalties, leading Amorim to state his players had spoken "really loudly." Amorim's postgame comments have sparked significant discussion, with many fans and analysts suggesting he may be growing tired of his time leading the club. However, during a pre-game news conference Friday ahead of Manchester United's matchup with Burnley on Saturday, Amorim provided some much-needed clarity over his comments. "I know that when I say these things, every time that we have a defeat like that I am going to speak like that," Amorim said. "This is my way of doing things. In that moment I was so frustrated. I'm going to be who I am, that's why I have the passion I have. That kind of performance [against Grimsby] was [unacceptable] ... Sometimes I want to quit. Sometimes I want to be here for 20 years. I need to improve on that — it's going to be hard — but now I am focused on the next game." When United hired Amorim, he left a Sporting Lisbon team that had been constructed in his image. Every player was accustomed to his stringent tactics and unique system, and their skill profiles fit perfectly. In Manchester, things are different; it's a club in the early stages of a rebuild. Amorim knew he was accepting a tough job. Numerous world-class managers have attempted to rejuvenate United in recent years. All of them have failed. However, it would appear Jim Ratcliffe and the United board are firmly behind Amorim's project, and he will be given the time he needs to get the team on track. Nevertheless, Amorim must stop making thinly veiled threats to quit. He has the full support of United's hierarchy. There has to be a bit more poise in how he accepts defeat. Of course, the hope will be that United can finally begin to click within his system, and these losses become few and far between. Perhaps that first victory of the season will come against Burnley on Saturday. The worry is that the next two games after the international break are against Manchester City and Chelsea. United is creating some strong foundations. However, there must be some patience if they want to get back to competing with the best teams in the world. Amorim can and should be the guy to lead them there.

Micah Parsons says Cowboys gave him an ultimatum before trade

Micah Parsons claims he was willing to return to the negotiating table with the Dallas Cowboys before he was traded to the Green Bay Packers in a deal that sent shockwaves across the NFL, but the team declined. Parsons was traded to the Packers on Thursday in exchange for two first-round draft picks and three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark. The deal came less than a month after Parsons publicly requested a trade, but the star pass-rusher says he was open to remaining in Dallas right up until he was moved. Parsons told Jane Slater of NFL Network on Thursday evening that he went back to the Cowboys in an attempt to discuss a new contract after the trade chatter began heating up this week. The 26-year-old says Jerry Jones and company told him he can either play under the fifth-year option on his rookie contract (which would have paid Parsons just over $24M) or be shown the door. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media confirmed that the Cowboys "had a chance to stop the deal." Jones insists that he and Parsons had a handshake agreement for a new long-term extension earlier in the offseason. The Cowboys owner said he and Parsons worked out all of the details, including length, average annual salary and guaranteed money. Jones claims he presented the terms to Parsons' agent David Mulugheta, and Mulugheta had a vulgar response. Mulugheta insists that is not the truth. The relationship between Parsons and the Cowboys deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks, but it sounds like Parsons was still willing to work to find middle ground. It would not be a surprise if Jones tells a much different story.

Former NFL QB shares harsh truth about Browns' Shedeur Sanders

Some previously accused Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski of sabotaging the development of rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders as Stefanski kept Sanders buried on the depth chart throughout the summer. A day after it was learned that Cleveland had agreed to trade Kenny Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders for a 2026 fifth-round draft pick, Stefanski confirmed that Sanders will enter the Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7 as the Browns' QB3 behind starter Joe Flacco and fellow first-year pro Dillon Gabriel. During a recent chat with Jason Reid of Andscape, former NFL quarterback Akili Smith explained that the tape shows Sanders is behind as it pertains to playing the sport's most important position at the highest level. "If you take some time and break down the tape, and you understand what concepts they’re running, you see that Dillon Gabriel is ahead of Shedeur," Smith said. "No one who looks at the tape of those two and understands what they’re looking at could see it any other way. Gabriel is ahead of him, and a big thing is pocket presence. Shedeur took a sack in [the last preseason] game…it was ridiculous. You had all these people [on social media] blaming the line. He’s dropping back [too far]. He had to step up in the pocket or throw the ball away. It’s one or the other." Sanders took five sacks and completed just 3-of-6 passes for 14 yards in Cleveland's preseason finale versus the Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 23. Meanwhile, Gabriel connected on 12-of-19 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown in that contest. Smith is among those who believe Gabriel’s tape from August "is just better" than what Sanders produced. Sanders took an FBS-high 94 sacks over his final two college seasons before he fell to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. In the eyes of some, his play against the Rams showed that it will take time for him to unlearn certain bad habits he picked up over the years. "Anyone who’s got such a long way to go has to keep his nose clean, not turn on the organization and keep working," Smith added. "He has to put everything he has into continuing to get better each day. And that way, even if it doesn’t happen in Cleveland, you’re still giving yourself a chance. You’d show other teams that you want this. You’d show how much it means to you. Then maybe it happens somewhere else." The Browns trading Pickett indicates they're dedicated to continuing their development of Sanders through at least the 2025 season. That said, the potential return of Deshaun Watson is looming over Sanders' status as Flacco prepares to start against Cincinnati.

Post-Ashton Jeanty era gets off to brutal start for No. 25 Boise State

There had to be at least some expectation that the Boise State Broncos were going to take a small step backwards in 2025. They probably just did not expect it to happen so soon in the season, and so emphatically. The No. 25 ranked Broncos were absolutely humiliated on Thursday night, losing 34-7 to an unranked South Florida team that was just 7-6 a year ago. It was a rude awakening for what might be ahead for Boise State following the departure of Heisman Trophy runner-up Ashton Jeanty. Jeanty's historic season helped carry the Broncos to an 12-1 regular season, with the only regular season loss being a three-point defeat to Oregon early in the season. They ended up in the College Football Playoff where they lost their first game to Penn State. But with Jeanty on to the NFL (a first-round pick by the Las Vegas Raiders) there was always going to be a huge hole for them to replace. Not only in terms of production and skill, but also in their identity. They had none of that power-running identity on Thursday. Not only did they allow 34 consecutive points to South Florida, but the Broncos also managed to rush for only 122 yards on 38 carries, coming out to just 3.2 yards per attempt. They averaged 6.1 yards per carry in 2024, tied for the second-highest mark in college football. On one hand, losing an early season game isn't the end of the world, especially in the era of expanded playoffs. Boise State could still run the table the rest of the way with a very manageable schedule and play its way back into playoff contention. It's also not uncommon for teams to struggle early in the season. There is no preseason in college football and everybody is just coming in cold right into real games. Sometimes teams take a while to get moving. But this is not a particularly good South Florida team, and for Boise State to come out so flat and be so uncompetitive in the opener is a bad sign for what might be ahead.
