Mo Salah’s next team revealed after Liverpool departure

Mohamed Salah has found his next chapter, and it comes as one of the more surprising landing spots imaginable for a player of his stature. Trabzonspor confirmed the signing of the Egyptian forward following his departure from Liverpool, with Salah joining the Turkish Super Lig club on a free transfer after his contract at Anfield expired.

“Mo Salah to Trabzonspor, here we go! Club confirms agreement in place for the Egyptian striker,” soccer insider Fabrizio Romano reported on X, formerly Twitter. “Salah joins on two year deal as free agent after leaving Liverpool.”

The move brings an end to months of speculation about where the 34-year-old would land.

Salah had been strongly linked with Saudi Arabia, along with Major League Soccer clubs San Diego and Sporting Kansas City, before ultimately deciding to remain in Europe. Turkish rivals Besiktas had appeared close to a deal just weeks earlier, but it is Trabzonspor that ultimately won the race, fending off interest from across multiple continents to land one of the sport’s biggest names.

Terms of the deal include an annual salary of roughly $17 million, along with a $5 million bonus and a 20 percent share of jersey sales, a structure that reportedly helped tip the decision in Trabzonspor’s favor over Besiktas.

Salah’s move comes fresh off a historic World Cup with Egypt this summer. As captain, he helped guide the Pharaohs to their best-ever World Cup finish, reaching the Round of 16 for the first time in program history after going undefeated through the group stage and eliminating Australia on penalties.

He scored once and added two assists across five matches before Egypt’s run ended in a wild 3-2 loss to defending champion Argentina, a match Egypt led 2-0 before Lionel Messi and Cristian Romero completed a late comeback.

Salah closes out a legendary nine-year run at Liverpool, where he scored 257 goals in 442 appearances and won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup twice, FIFA Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup.

His final season at the club grew increasingly tense, with his relationship with manager Arne Slot souring after he was dropped for three straight matches late last year. Slot has since been sacked, though Liverpool never reversed course on letting Salah leave.

Trabzonspor, which finished third in the Super Lig last season to qualify for the Europa League, is hoping Salah’s arrival can help push the club toward its first league title since the 2021-22 campaign.
