Mohamed Salah’s past remarks shed light on struggles with Alexander Isak at Liverpool

Mohamed Salah’s performance for Liverpool this season has been atypical.

The winger is typically a key part of what makes them so difficult to stop. But while he has been involved in six goals across all competitions, his overall impact has dipped compared to what we have come to expect from him.

He has also struggled to get into matches and has wasted some good opportunities when they have fallen his way.

This is particularly surprising given the arrivals of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, who were expected to ease the load on Salah. However, rather than improving, the situation seems to have deteriorated, raising doubts about Liverpool’s ability to defend their Premier League title this year.

Some quotes from Salah discussing his favourite teammates have resurfaced recently, which might help shed some light on why things have not quite clicked for him at Anfield this term.

During Jurgen Klopp’s tenure at Liverpool, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Mohamed Salah became one of the most recognisable forward lines in football.

Firmino was brilliant at linking play and creating space, allowing Mane and Salah to move into central positions more often.

While he was not always the main goal threat, his ability to set up chances for the other two was just as important. The years they spent together were some of Salah’s most productive.

That could be why he has not quite clicked with Alexander Isak yet. The new signing plays a very different style, which might not suit Salah as well as Firmino did.

Salah even mentioned last year that Firmino was his favourite teammate to play alongside, according to quotes shared by The Metro.

“Who do I most like to play with? It was Firmino. Now I feel like I generally like playing with Nunez.

“A lot of people don’t like him, but I like playing with him. I see Bahaa (the man who asked the question) keeps shaking his head, not liking [Nunez].

“Nah, I like playing with him in general. [Nunez is] a player with different skills. Not a lot of people understand his ball.”

For Liverpool to achieve any success this season, an immediate turnaround is essential.

Currently second in the Premier League, their recent three-game performance suggests that a top-four finish would be unexpected.

There is no real rhythm to how Arne Slot’s side are playing at the moment, and that includes how disorganised they look.

Right now it is difficult to see what can be done – unless Slot figures out a way to get Salah and Isak firing. If he cannot do that after the October international break, then their season could go off track quickly.
