Luka Vuskovic is keen to prove his worth abroad and come back to Tottenham to fight for a place in the starting eleven next season
Tottenham defender Luka Vuskovic was all set to prove his worth at N17 this season under Thomas Frank. The Croatia international had come out and said that he was willing to fight for his place at the North London club club whilst he was on loan at KVC Westerlo last season. However, the intense competition for a spot in the starting eleven certainly made life tough for the 18-year-old.
The talented centre-back instantly made an impact under Thomas Frank during the pre-season. Vuskovic rose high to score the North London club’s first goal during their pre-season game against Reading. And it looked like he would be playing first-team football regularly for Spurs this season under the Danish tactician.
However, it was certain that the 18-year-old was never going to get the nod over Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven for most of the games. And that made him switch clubs for this season as he joined HSV Hamburg on a season-long loan earlier last week. The decision to join the Bundesliga outfit was simple… gain more experience and continue his development.
Many fans questioned Tottenham’s decision to loan out Luka Vuskovic. The 18-year-old showed time and again during pre-season that he was good enough to provide cover for Romero and Van de Ven. However, it was later reported that the Croatia international pushed for a loan move as he did not want to wait on the sidelines for an opportunity, and instead play regularly and gain exposure.
It is fair to say that a loan move to any English club would have been far more ideal for Vuskovic. However, John Wenham has reminded fans that a move to any Premier League club was never an option. Speaking to Tottenham News, he said,
“My first option for him would have been a Premier League loan or even a Championship loan because I just wanted him to get used to English football. But I’ve since been told that under the rules, you can’t move to a club in the same league, in the same window.”
The Lilywhite Rose owner added,
“So the Premier League would have been out of the question because he officially signed this summer, he couldn’t have gone on loan to another Premier League team.”
John Wenham admitted that he wanted to see Vuskovic being loaned out to a Premier League or a Championship club for this season. The reason being that the talented defender could get used to the way football is played in England. However, the Lilywhite Rose owner added that moving to an English club in the same league and in the same window was never an option due to certain rules.
Vuskovic admitted earlier this week as well that Thomas Frank wanted to keep him at the club, and the Danish tactician also promised to play the youngster in cup competitions or in case of an injury to Romero or Van de Ven. But the Croatia international decided to move to pastures new on a temporary basis as he wanted to improve his game and come back to N17 as a better player by playing regularly.
