Napoli have been arithmetically eliminated from the Champions and Europa League races following their latest results, which will severely complicate their search for a Victor Osimhen heir this summer. The top names on their radar, Jonathan David and Santiago Gimenez, will be a lot harder to sign without the cups, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs (via Radio Punto Nuovo).

The Partenopei have been keeping tabs on Artem Dovbyk, but Girona have deemed him untouchable. Moreover, he’s fascinated by the opportunity to star in the top European competition with his current side.

Napoli have brilliantly bounced back the previous times they parted ways with their main star. They replaced Edinson Cavani with Gonzale Higuain, and El Pipita with Arkadiusz Milik. The mission will be harder this time around, even though they’ll have plenty to spend.

The Azzurri have taken an interest in Mateo Retegui, who has bagged seven goals in his maiden Serie A season. They particularly like his attitude. Antwerp’s Kevin Denkey is gaining steam too. He has hit the net 28 times across all competitions this season. His price tag is around €20M, but he has a host of suitors.

Our Take on the Napoli Attack

Not playing in the cups will be a problem appeal-wise, but they’ll be able to offset that by hiring the right coach and handing out a little larger wages that they’d prefer to lure players. Given their track record and situation, it wouldn’t be surprising if they rolled the dice with somebody not super established.
