Ange Postecoglou needs to change his style of play if he wants to survive at Tottenham

There was a stir in the Premier League last season when Tottenham played attacking football from the get-go under Ange Postecoglou. The Lilywhites had the intent to attack from minute one and they did not stop going until the final whistle. The fans loved ‘Ange-Ball’ as it showed that the North London club feared no one and would not stop playing their way, regardless of the opposition.

Much to their credit, Spurs were also leading the Premier League table for a short time during the first ten games of that season. However, this season has been completely different for Ange’s men. One can say that the other teams figured out Tottenham’s approach and did not let Ange’s men play with the same intent.

The Lilywhites finished this Premier League season just a place above the relegation zone, registering 22 losses along the way. The fans had also seen enough and urged Ange Postecoglou to change his setup if he wanted to save his job at N17. The Australian did just that in the Europa League and managed to win the competition with a pragmatic approach.

John Obi Mikel wants Ange Postecoglou to continue the ‘pragmatic’ approach at Tottenham

Tottenham’s Europa League journey this season showed that Ange Postecoglou had matured as a coach and realised his mistake. The Australian changed the way his team played and the Lilywhites were defensively resolute in the latter stages of the competition. They managed to keep three clean sheets in the knockout stages, including one the final.

Now, John Obi Mikel has urged Big Ange to play the same way heading into next season. Speaking to Fox Sports, Mikel said,

“I just think sometimes there needs to be a balance to that. You can’t keep attacking and attacking and damage your balance. You need to sometimes shore up the game. Keep the balance of the team. I think, for me, that’s my only criticism with Ange. He needs to sometimes shore up the game a little bit more. Sometimes, it doesn’t have to be a basketball game, you know what I mean? Keep the balance of the team.”

John Obi Mikel insists that the team needs balance and Tottenham cannot attack all the time. The ex-Chelsea star has urged Ange Postecoglou to ‘shore up’ the game and be more pragmatic in his approach if he wants to succeed at N17. Mikel also suggests that it does not have to be ‘end-to-end’ attacking football all the time, and there is a need for balance in the team.

Well, there have been no indications to suggest that Ange Postecoglou will even stay at Spurs beyond this season. The Australian is adamant to continue at the club and has made that quite clear in recent weeks after the Europa League success. But Daniel Levy is still taking his time to decide Big Ange’s fate at N17 and fans are eagerly waiting to see what the club chairman decides to do.

In an ideal world, Ange Postecoglou’s job would not have been questioned after the European glory this season. But this is football… and anything can happen at Tottenham. The fans are hoping that Big Ange gets a chance to build on the historic achievement next season and kickstart a new era at N17.
