Celtic reportedly explored a loan move for the 22-year-old, but Fofana opted for Charlton Athletic instead. That switch ultimately collapsed, leaving him still on the books at Stamford Bridge until at least January.

As the news came through on the BBC 5 Live programme Monday Night Club, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton criticised Fofana as it appeared he was on his way to the English Championship.

Sutton said: “God, what an idiot. Charlton? Instead of Celtic? Really?”

Sutton – who has been rightfully outspoken about Celtic’s dreadful transfer window all summer – went onto lambast the way the club’s hierarchy has operated in the market.

“It’s been a nightmare, however many months now, of recruitment at Celtic,” he said. Never replaced Kyogo, never replaced Nicolas Kuhn; Brendan Rodgers clearly isn’t happy.”

“When Callum McGregor says they need bodies in the door – Callum is super intelligent, he’s articulate, he’s measured. When the captain says they need players in, out of the Champions League, there is a large element of the support that are getting restless.”

Last night Celtic were ‘delighted’ to announce the signing of Kelechi Iheanacho on a one-year deal. This ‘delight’ was not echoed by supporters in the comments section of the club’s post on X. The hierarchy were so desperate that they had to turn to a guy who knocked Celtic back in January for Middlesbrough. How embarrassing.

Celtic ended the window signing 11 players which included: Kieran Tierney, Benjamin Nygren, Callum Osmand, Ross Doohan Hayato Inamura, Shin Yamada, Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, Marcelo Saracchi, Michel-Ange Balikwisha, Sebastian Tounekti and now Iheanacho on a free.

Heading out the door were Nicolas Kuhn, Adam Idah, Gustaf Lagerbielke, Marco Tilio, Kwon, Greg Taylor, Scott Bain, Luis Palma, Maik Nawrocki, Stephen Welsh, Adam Montgomery and Josh Clarke.

Celtic ended with a net profit of around £13.6m which excludes the sell-on-clauses the club would have profited from for Jeremie Frimpong signing for Liverpool and Ben Doak joining Bournemouth. Add those and the World Class money makers on the Celtic Board will have turned over £20m in transfer window profits.
