New Inter Milan coach Cristian Chivu is ready to hand Josep Martinez increased regular playing time next season.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInterNews, the Spaniard looks set for a more prominent role after Simone Inzaghi’s exit.

Josep Martinez joined Inter Milan from Genoa for a reported fee of €15 million last summer.

However, he spent most of his first season at San Siro playing second fiddle to first-choice goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Yet, the managerial change could see the 27-year-old become a more integral part of the squad.

New Inter Milan Manager Cristian Chivu Prepared to Give Josep Martinez More Game Time

Martinez only made five appearances in Serie A last season.

Despite his limited game time, the Spaniard fared well, registering three clean sheets.

Furthermore, he starred in the Coppa Italia, racking up two shutouts in four matches.

However, Sommer was Inzaghi’s first choice, starting in every high-profile game.

With Chivu’s arrival, Martinez’s place in the pecking order could change.

It’s a natural decision, considering Sommer will be 37 in December.
