Newcastle United will be without captain Bruno Guimarães for a significant spell after the Brazilian international suffered a hamstring injury.
The Athletic reported that the 28-year-old midfielder will be out of action for between six and 10 weeks. He limped off during Tuesday’s 2-1 away victory against Tottenham.
Newcastle are currently in 10th place in the Premier League table, having secured 36 points through 26 matches played. The Magpies sit just above Tyne–Wear derby rivals Sunderland, who are even with Newcastle on points but possess a weaker goal difference.
The extended absence of Guimarães couldn’t come at a worse time for Newcastle, given the packed set of fixtures ahead over the coming weeks.
Newcastle travel to Villa Park on Saturday to face Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round. The Magpies will then square off with Qarabag in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League knockout phase play-offs in Baku on Wednesday.
A tough test awaits Newcastle when they return to Premier League play against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on February 21. Newcastle plays the second leg against Qarabag on February 24 at St. James' Park.
Guimarães has been an inspirational figure for Newcastle. Since he made his full debut for the club in March 2022, the Magpies haven’t won in any of the 12 games in which he hasn’t started.
The Brazilian ace has played in 23 league matches this season and chipped in nine goals. Since arriving at St. James’ Park in January 2022, Guimarães has scored 31 goals in 189 appearances for the club across all competitions.
It's possible that Guimarães will be out until April, so it will be up to his teammates to push the club forward in his absence.
