Atalanta midfielder Ederson looked nailed-on to join Manchester United for weeks.
The Red Devils had agreed a £35m+ deal to sign the Brazilian, before reports that the deal was considered off, and Ederson would return to Atalanta.
It’s a strange situation, as the transfer appears uncertain, but English media continue to preach that Manchester United want the deal to go ahead.
While one Brazilian is forced to wait, another, Andrey Santos, is set to sign for Michael Carrick’s side. The 22-year-old will join the Red Devils in a £50 million deal from Chelsea and has already completed a Manchester United medical.
The key sources of media that keep relaying the fact that Ederson will not sign for United are outlets in Italy. Website TGcom24 reports that fellow Premier League club, Newcastle United, are now ready to step up their efforts to sign Ederson from Atalanta, who remains on the transfer market.
Eddie Howe’s side have already lost midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer, who signed for Tottenham Hotspur for £100 million. Bruno Guimaraes edges closer to a move too, and has expressed his desire to sign for Arsenal. Signing a player for the heart of their side becomes a priority now for Newcastle.
With Atalanta hoping to offer Ederson a contract extension at the Serie A club, a move may be difficult to come by for Newcastle.
With potential worries over his injury record on Manchester United’s side too, this could be another hurdle for the North East side.
For now, it appears any move for Ederson to sign for Manchester United has stalled. Newcastle will be hoping to get a deal done for the player at the same fee the Red Devils agreed, a fair price with the current state of the transfer market.
