The biggest question for Manchester United this summer has been how to find balance in the midfield. New manager Ruben Amorim has made it clear that if the team is to be taken to the top again, the midfield must first be strengthened. Experienced players like Casemiro are no longer able to show the same speed as before, and statistics also show that his speed has been much less than other defensive midfielders.
Manuel Ugarte’s style is considered to be very safe, due to which there is difficulty in making quick transitions and creating offensive chances. This is why the club is looking for a defensive midfielder who brings energy, shows sharpness in tackling and gives freedom to creative players like Bruno Fernandes.
This is the background in which Eduardo Camavinga’s name has come to the fore again. This young midfielder from Real Madrid has been on Manchester United’s list for a long time. Now reports from Fichajes suggest that Newcastle United are willing to bid around €40m, while Real Madrid believe the bid is worth at least €70m.
That difference suggests a deal will not be easy, but given Amorim’s needs, United must keep their options open. Carlos Baleba has been linked in the past, and more recently, Conor Gallagher has also been considered a target. Still, Camavinga’s profile appears to be the most attractive as he can break down defences and carry the ball forward at the same time.
Real Madrid don’t look set to sell the 22-year-old at the moment, but there are already plenty of big midfielders in the squad, so a deal could happen at the right price. Newcastle have the lure of Champions League football, but United’s name, brand and financial muscle can still sway anyone. That’s why Manchester United can’t be ruled out of the race.
From a United fan’s point of view, it would be a dream to get Camavinga. He is a player who is everywhere, taking the ball, running and dictating the pace of the game with his passing. His versatility shows that he can play deep as a “6” in Amorim’s system or even make an impact up front as an “8”. The Frenchman has better mobility than Casemiro and more aggression and ball-carrying ability than Ugarte. Amorim’s 3-4-3 system seems perfect for a player like him, as he would provide security to the backline and give Fernandes more creative freedom.
The problem is that Real Madrid are asking a very high price, and Newcastle’s interest looks serious. However, it would be hard for United to pass up this opportunity. If the window opens in January and the price is within sensible limits, then United should definitely move.
If the transfer doesn’t happen, there’s no need to panic. United have already put Carlos Baleba and Conor Gallagher on the table. The club is also looking at Morten Hjulmand as a potential replacement for Kobbie Mainoo, and Amorim himself is challenging Mainoo to fight for his place. This means that whether it’s Camavinga or someone else, the future of midfield has to change.
We think that if United can land Camavinga, Amorim’s project could reach new heights. But even if the deal doesn’t happen, the club must pick the right player who can make a long-term difference at Old Trafford.
