Sandro Tonali remains one of the midfielders Manchester United have wanted this summer.
However, Newcastle United have now rejected another approach for the Italy international.
The 26-year-old has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs after another strong campaign at St James’ Park.
United previously viewed Tonali as one of several possible midfield solutions as Michael Carrick looked to reshape his squad following Casemiro’s departure.
However, the financial package required has always made a deal difficult.
Manchester United have already agreed a deal with Atalanta for Ederson, while Mateus Fernandes has also been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Fernandes had already agreed personal terms with United earlier in the window, although Tottenham have since made major progress.
Spurs have now reached agreements with both West Ham United and the player for Fernandes, showing their determination to strengthen Roberto De Zerbi’s midfield this summer.
Now, another Tottenham midfield pursuit has hit a major obstacle.
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle have rebuffed a second approach from Tottenham Hotspur for Tonali.
The report claims Spurs did not improve their original £75 million offer.
Instead, the north London club asked Newcastle to reconsider that proposal, only for the Magpies to swiftly reject the request.
De Zerbi has identified Sandro Tonali as his top target this summer and wants to bring his fellow Italian to London.
Tonali is said to be open to exploring his options after three seasons on Tyneside.
However, Newcastle’s asking price is believed to be closer to £100 million.
So far, Tottenham have not presented a package the Magpies would consider acceptable.
The Daily Mail add that Manchester United have held long-term interest in Tonali but are now said to be looking elsewhere.
Manchester City and Arsenal are also monitoring the situation, although Arsenal have previously been viewed as Tonali’s preferred destination if their interest accelerates.
Tonali still has four years remaining on his Newcastle contract and is already among the club’s highest earners.
That means any deal to prise him away from St James’ Park would be expensive.
For now, Newcastle remain firm, leaving Tottenham frustrated again in their pursuit of one of the Premier League’s most highly-rated midfielders.
