Newcastle United suffered a defeat to Sunderland during Sunday’s Tyne-Wear Derby.

The Magpies will be thoroughly disappointed with the 2-1 defeat, which saw them concede in injury time. It has been a disappointing few weeks for Newcastle, and they needed a positive result in the derby to lift the spirits around the club.

Meanwhile, the defeat in the derby is not the only cause for concern. They are now at risk of losing a key player to suspension in the Premier League. They could be without Brazilian star Joelinton, who is at risk of a yellow card ban in the Premier League, heading into the final seven games of the season, as per Shields Gazette.

Joelinton picked up a stoppage-time booking after the winning goal from Brian Brobbey. The Newcastle star was looking to urge the Sunderland players into restarting the game quickly, and he was handed a booking because of that. It was his ninth booking of the Premier League campaign, and another yellow card would see him banned for two matches. However, if he manages to avoid a booking during Newcastle’s next Premier League match at Crystal Palace, he will be able to avoid the suspension.

Premier League rules state that if a player can avoid accumulating 10 yellow cards until the 32nd league game of the season, he will be on a clean slate for the remaining matches of the campaign. It remains to be seen if the 29-year-old can avoid a booking against the Eagles. Newcastle have important matches coming up against clubs like Arsenal, and they simply cannot afford to lose the Brazilian.

It has been a disappointing season for Newcastle, and they will be desperate to finish strongly. Losing a key player for two matches would be a devastating blow.
