Former Manchester United midfielder and academy chief Nicky Butt has delivered a brutal assessment on Alejandro Garnacho.
He described the winger’s attitude during his time at Old Trafford as a “disgrace”.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Butt did not hold back when reflecting on Garnacho’s rise and fall at United.
He said: “The best thing for me that Manchester United did was sell him because, forget his ability, I don’t think he’s that great anyway.”
He then added: “However, his attitude for me was a disgrace when he was at United.”
Alejandro Garnacho joined Chelsea in a £40 million move last summer after his relationship with United collapsed.
Butt’s comments suggests suggest those issues ran farther than a simple disagreement.
The former midfielder also claimed the Argentine “got above his station way too quick” and gained “superstar status way too quick” during his early breakthrough.
The timing of those remarks is notable given recent events.
Garnacho reposted nostalgic edits of himself in a United shirt ahead of facing his former club, before struggling to make an impact as Chelsea were beaten 1-0.
The fallout extended beyond the pitch.
After the match, Luke Shaw appeared to aim a dig at Garnacho on Instagram by posting an image of himself pushing the winger over.
Several United players were seen interacting with the post.
That reaction added to the sense that tensions remain over the way Garnacho left Old Trafford.
The winger had also faced a difficult spell at Chelsea more broadly and was recently booed after coming on against Manchester City.
His situation now leaves serious questions over his long-term future at Chelsea despite arriving with high expectations.
It was recently reported that Chelsea want to sell the 21-year-old.
For Manchester United, however, Butt’s comments reinforce the belief that moving on was the right decision at the time.
Whether Garnacho can rebuild his reputation will likely depend on how he responds to growing criticism both on and off the pitch.
