Liverpool marched into the final of the 2024/25 Carabao Cup with a dominant 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the second half, overturning a 1-0 deficit from the previous leg. Virgil van Dijk was one of the goal scorers in the win, but gave a worrying contract update on his future.
The Netherlands defender is currently into the final months of his current contract with the Reds, with his deal set to expire at the end of June, 2024. After the match, Van Dijk was asked if there were any positive updates on a possible contract extension and he told Sky Sports: “The only thing I’m focusing on is the game ahead of me, and I’m feeling good. I think everyone can see that, and what the future brings, at the moment, I’ve got no idea. So anyone who says they know it, they are absolutely wrong. But we’ll see what happens.”
It still appears that Van Dijk has not come any closer to agreeing on a new contract with the current Premier League leaders. He had claimed earlier this season that talks had started over a new deal and reportedly even rejected an offer from Liverpool in December, with the Reds not being able to come any closer to matching his demands.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot was all praise for his captain after his contribution in their win over Tottenham, and when asked on the centre-back’s importance in the team and his future, Slot answered: “He’s been outstanding for this club for so many years and, since I’ve been here, he’s been outstanding for me as well. Good health is the first thing I wish him, and I hope to continue working with him for a long time, although I don’t think that will surprise you.”
It’s obvious that the Dutch coach doesn’t want to get dragged into the contract extension drama for the likes of Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold because that is the responsibility of sporting director Richard Hughes to look after. Considering Van Dijk’s performances this season, as he’s helped Liverpool keep 16 clean sheets in 32 appearances, the Reds’ probably wouldn’t want to lose him as a free agent in the summer window.
