Liverpool already signed one of the best strikers on the summer transfer market last month, inking Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt to a deal worth around 80 million pounds.

After Liverpool sold star left winger Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich for about that same money, there has been an increased interest in landing another forward, with the Reds actually focusing on another striker as opposed to a winger.

Even though Liverpool have invested heavily in attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz and Ekitike as two top attacking options through the middle from the Bundesliga, the Reds have been swayed by the prospect of landing one of the two best No. 9’s in the Premier League, Newcastle star Alexander Isak.

The Swedish international has been pushing forcefully for a move outside of St. James’s Park, even holding out of practices and training with his former club Real Sociedad instead of playing nice with Newcastle.

Liverpool are backing away from Alexander Isak

But it looks like that could all be for naught. According to a new report from Give Me Sport transfer insider Ben Jacobs, Liverpool have “no plans” to reengage with another bid to Newcastle for Alexander Isak after the Magpies roundly rejected their opening offer.

Liverpool had submitted a transfer bid of 110 million pounds, per Jacobs, and they now see negotiations with Newcastle as “futile” unless if the Magpies drastically reduce their demands.

It appears Newcastle are asking for 150 million pounds, which is the price tag they quoted to other top Premier League suitors like Arsenal and Chelsea during the 2024/25 Premier League season.

That was enough to scare off the big London clubs, but Liverpool were hoping that Isak holding Newcastle’s feet to the fire by not showing up to practices would help bring that price down to something more reasonable, such as a fee around 120 million pounds.

Perhaps Liverpool would meet Newcastle at the 120 million pound point from the 110 million pound offer, but if Newcastle are digging their heels in at 150 million pounds, then maybe Liverpool don’t have any leg room here.

But there is still about a month left in the transfer window, and if Isak keeps pushing for a move to the reigning Premier League champions, then the Magpies may be forced to take whatever offer is on the table from Liverpool, which is still quite the chunk of change.

Liverpool, though, had to know all along that Newcastle are looking for a record-breaking offer exceeding the 116 million pounds Liverpool paid for Wirtz. Though Isak is a proven Premier League No. 9, Wirtz is both younger and significantly better than Isak, so you can see why the Reds would be cooled off from Newcastle if 150 million pounds is the quoted price.
