Tottenham need to get going in the transfer market before it gets too late. The Lilywhites are already playing catch-up in the market while other clubs are bringing in new players. After enduring a disastrous domestic campaign, one would have hoped that the North London club would at least bring in a new signing in the first few days of the transfer window, but Spurs have failed to do that.
It is believed that Daniel Levy wanted to sort out the managerial situation at N17 before approaching clubs to sign new players. The club chairman did not want to have a situation where a player was signed without the approval of the new manager. However, now that the managerial decision is taken, Levy must act fast and bring in the intended targets quickly.
Spurs need to improve in all areas of the pitch. But it will be tough for the Lilywhites to bring in quality signings before cashing in on underperforming players first. Daniel Levy is forced to adopt the ‘sell-to-buy’ policy in the summer after the club finished in the bottom half of the Premier League table. While they may not have the financial pull to sign numerous quality players, the lure of Champions League football might just come in handy.
It was reported earlier that Tottenham were willing to land Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo in the summer despite Manchester United’s interest in the winger. The arrival of Thomas Frank at N17 was also seen as a massive boost for the Lilywhites to land the Cameroon international for next season.
However, reliable journalist Ben Jacobs has given an update on Mbeumo’s situation amid constant speculation. While talking on The United Stand podcast (via TBR Football), Jacobs said,
“My understanding is very clear as of now, Tottenham know Mbeumo’s preference is Manchester United, as do all other suitors. Just because a new manager comes in, especially under Daniel Levy, it’s very unlikely they’ll turn around to Thomas Frank and say ‘is getting Mbeumo a deal breaker and can you hijack Manchester United’s plans.’”
The journalist added,
“I’m not expecting Thomas Frank’s expected arrival at Tottenham to hugely influence the Mbeumo situation, the most important thing is that Mbeumo wants to join Manchester United and if the clubs agree the fee, regardless of the Tottenham situation, Mbeumo will still pick Manchester United.”
Ben Jacobs has suggested that Bryan Mbeumo prefers to join Man United over Tottenham, despite Thomas Frank’s arrival at N17. The journalist has also added that Daniel Levy will not ask Frank to convince the 25-year-old to join the Lilywhites in the summer. Jacobs suggested that Mbeumo would still pick United even if Spurs agree a fee with Brentford over the possible signing of the Cameroon international.
Now that Spurs are prepared to miss out on signing the world-class winger, the Lilywhites must shift their focus on other intended targets. It was reported earlier that Tottenham are also interested in signing Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest in the summer. However, the North London club would have to fork out £60m for his services for next season.
