Tottenham have managed to win the Europa League in the most unexpected way possible. The Lilywhites eclipsed Manchester United in the final and managed to end the 17-year wait for a major trophy. It was a proper team effort to get over the line and Brennan Johnson’s first-half goal was enough to ensure the North London club lifted the Europa league trophy last week.
However, the Premier League campaign has been a complete contrast to the Europa league success. Spurs finished the league season just a place above the relegation zone and registered 22 losses along the way. There were some unwanted records broken by Ange Postecoglou’s men as well. They became the first team to not get relegated after registering 22 league losses.
The Lilywhites also failed to reach the 40-point mark this season. While fans will be celebrating the Europa League success in the summer, Spurs cannot get complacent as they need to build on the European success and close the gap on their rivals next year. It is clear for all to see that the North London club needs to invest heavily in the summer if they want to kickstart a new era at N17 in the right way.
Tottenham just did not get going in the Premier League this season. The Lilywhites ended the season with a 1-4 loss at home to Brighton to cap off a disastrous domestic campaign. The fans were in celebratory mood after the Europa League success, but it was clear to see that the Lilywhites still need to address a lot of problems in the summer before they could compete for trophies again.
Even Simon Jordan took the chance to criticise Tottenham’s dismal Premier League campaign. Speaking on talkSPORT (via X), Jordan said,
“I still don’t think Tottenham’s aspirations to finish 17th in the league have been eclipsed solely by Europa League trophy. It’s wonderful for them and gets the monkey off their back. But does it build a winning culture? Does it do what Ange suggests it does?”
The pundit added,
“I would say not necessarily. Because I was talking about the league and Newcastle won a league cup, they kicked on and have now finished 3rd in the Premier League and gone on to the Champions League. That’s where you build winning cultures from.”
Simon Jordan suggested that the Europa League success was not enough to overshadow the Premier League failures this season. The pundit questioned whether finishing 17th in the league would build a winning culture at the club. Jordan answered the question himself by saying that he does not think it does. He also pointed out Newcastle United’s success and said that the Toons kicked on after winning the Carabao Cup and ensured a top four finish in the league. And urged Tottenham to follow suit if they wanted to build that culture as well.
Now, Daniel Levy has a big decision in his hands before bringing in any new players into the club. The Spurs chairman must first sort out the managerial situation at N17. It was reported earlier that Levy was leaning towards sacking Ange Postecoglou even after the Europa League success. If this still stands true, then the club should not waste no time in relieving Big Ange from his duties quickly.
