Novak Djokovic’s controversial comments towards Jannik Sinner’s coach Darren Cahill went viral after his Australian Open loss

In 2023, Novak Djokovic took a brutal dig at the ATP Coach of the Year winners. Jannik Sinner‘s coaches, Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi, were awarded the title, which Djokovic did not like. His comments on Sinner’s coach have now gone viral because of his defeat at the hands of the Italian in the 2024 Australian Open semifinals on Friday (January 26) at the Rod Laver Arena.

Some notable performances of Sinner in 2023 came in ATP Masters 1000 in Toronto where he emerged as winner, then he played his first Nitto ATP Finals. He also reached the Wimbledon semifinal for the first time. The Italian also lifted four tour-level trophies, finished the year with a 64-15 record, and also grabbed the ATP Fan’s Favourite Award.

Djokovic’s coach Goran Ivanisevic, was among the other coaches nominated for the award. The other coaches were Hubert Hurkacz’s coach Craig Boynton, Carlos Alcaraz’s coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, and Ben Shelton’s coach Bryan Shelton. As Djokovic’s coach did not win the title, it irked the 24-time Grand Slam champion because he lifted three Grand Slam titles that year. Apart from the three major titles, he lifted 12 ATP titles, including his seventh victory at the ATP Finals.

Congratulations to Darren and Simone for a great season with Jannik. Goran, I guess we need to win 4/4 slams for you to maybe (just maybe) be considered coach of the year. Winning year-end #1,3 GS, and WTF and making history of this sport is not enough, my dear coach. Djokovic wrote that has now gone viral

Novak Djokovic vs Jannik Sinner match recap

This defeat at the semifinals of the Australian Open was Novak Djokovic’s first one after a whopping 2,195 days. The 10th-time Australian Open champion was all set to surpass Margaret Court by becoming the first player (men and women) to clinch 25 major singles titles.

But Sinner had other ideas. After easily winning the first set 6-1, he continued to display his incredible skills against the Serb in the second set, winning it with a score of 6-2.

Now Djokovic has often made comebacks despite losing the first two sets. In that match also he did that when he denied Sinner a straight-set win by taking the third set 7-6(8-6).

But unfortunately for the Serb, he couldn’t repeat the same in the fourth set. He could win just three games in the fourth set, while Sinner ensured he took advantage of his previous two wins to take the set, winning the match with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(6-8), 6-3.
