Ethan Nwaneri remains a key player for England’s Under-21 side, and the Arsenal loanee helped Lee Carsley’s team secure qualification for the 2027 European Championship despite a goalless draw with Slovakia.
England needed only a point at the bet365 Stadium in Stoke, and the 0-0 result was enough to confirm their place at next summer’s tournament in Albania and Serbia. The Young Lions have now qualified with a game to spare, having won seven and drawn two of their nine qualifying matches.
Nwaneri started the match and played 70 minutes before being replaced by Josh King. He came close to scoring and was involved in England’s attacking play, with Max Alleyne striking the post from a low corner delivered by the Arsenal midfielder.
Bulinews says Nwaneri was one of England’s key players as they attempted to break down Slovakia. His clubmate Jobe Bellingham was also involved with the squad but returned to Borussia Dortmund early after his man of the match performance against Kazakhstan.
Nwaneri has been in strong form for both club and country. He scored twice in England’s 4-1 win over Moldova earlier in the campaign and has continued to establish himself as an important figure for the Under-21 side.
Arsenal sent Nwaneri on loan to Borussia Dortmund during the summer, and the move appears to be benefiting his development. Regular football in the Bundesliga has helped him maintain his place in England’s Under-21 setup and continue his progress.
England are the defending champions, having won the 2023 and 2025 editions of the tournament. Nwaneri will hope to remain fit and earn selection for the finals, where he could play an important role in the Young Lions’ attempt to win a third consecutive title.
England will complete their qualifying campaign against the Republic of Ireland in Cork on Tuesday, and they can finish the group unbeaten if they avoid defeat.
