The fourth official who allegedly used a racist term during Tuesday's Champions League fixture between Paris-Saint Germain and Istanbul Basaksehir that was ultimately abandoned on 13 minutes and completed on Wednesday is attempting to clear his name.
"I am just trying to be good," Romanian official Sebastian Coltescu told Prosport, according to an ESPN story. "Anyone who knows me knows I'm not racist. At least, I hope that's the case."
Players from both teams said they heard Coltescu use a racial slur aimed at Basaksehir's Cameroonian assistant manager Pierre Webo during Tuesday's game. Following a stoppage of play and a lengthy conversation that involved Basaksehir striker Demba Ba and Webo confronting Coltescu, members from both clubs stormed off the pitch and refused to complete the contest.
As Ben Church and Aleks Klosok of CNN explained, UEFA assigned a new refereeing team for the match resumed on Wednesday at the Parc Des Princes. PSG cruised to a 5-1 win to finish atop Group H on 12 points, while Basaksehir were last on three points.
The night's most memorable moment occurred before kickoff, however, as players from both teams dropped to a single knee during the Champions League anthem.
