Out of the blue, Lazio announced that they have extended the contract of their experienced full-back, Adam Marusic, until June 2029.
The 33-year-old has been a stalwart at the back for the Biancocelesti since making the move from Oostende in the summer of 2017. With 334 appearances to his name, he is Lazio’s most-capped player in the current squad.
Marusic also remains integral to Maurizio Sarri’s plans, as the manager considers him his first-choice full-back. His versatility allows him to cover either flank, depending on the identity of the other full-back (usually one between Manuel Lazzari and Luca Pellegrini).
In recent weeks, several sources in the Italian press claimed that Lazio have been struggling to find an agreement with the Montenegrin on a new contract, which could pave the way for his departure on a free transfer at the end of the season. He has also been linked with a move to AC Milan, where he would reunite with Lazio’s former director, Igli Tare.
Nevertheless, Lazio took all observers by surprise on Thursday afternoon by announcing that Marusic put pen to paper. The Biancocelesti confirmed through an official statement published on the club’s official website that the experienced player is now under contract until June 2029.
SS Lazio announces the contract renewal of player Adam Marusic, who will continue to wear our jersey until June 30, 2028, with an option for an additional season until June 30, 2029.
Interestingly, Marusic’s contract renewal ensued on the back of his dismissal against Napoli, after sparking a brawl with Pasquale Mazzocchi. The veteran served a one-match ban against Fiorentina, and he will be back at Sarri’s disposal for the weekend’s trip to Verona.
Marusic is currently 11th on the list of Lazio’s all-time appearance makers, but if he remains a regular starter for a few more years, he should be able to break Stefan Radu’s record, which stands at 427.
