RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons pens five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur after snubbing Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur are leaving a lot of their transfer business until the closing stages of the summer transfer window and how!

Spurs have been targeting a new No.10 and left-winger for the best part of the transfer window. This is because they have seen club legend Son Heung-min depart to MLS club Los Angeles FC and James Maddison go down to an ACL injury. In their pursuit of a replacement for Maddison, the North London club have faced several setbacks over the summer, missing out on the likes of Eberechi Eze, Morgan Gibbs-White and Nico Paz.

As a result, Tottenham turned their attention to RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons, who also happened to be a target for Chelsea. Spurs enquired about the signing of Xavi Simons earlier this week, with Thomas Frank pushing Daniel Levy to bring in a creative force before the window slams shut. The 22-year-old had agreed personal terms with Chelsea but the club’s failure to move on players surplus to Enzo Maresca’s requirements put a deal on hold.

Sensing a deal could be done, Spurs submitted a bid to RB Leipzig on Thursday. The offer was understood to be roughly of what the Bundesliga club valued their star attacker at as well, giving the London-based a big boost to land him.

Xavi Simons agrees Tottenham contract until 2030

Now, according to credible journalist David Ornstein on X, Simons has signed a contract with Tottenham until 2030 with an option to extend by two years. With this, Tottenham have now landed themselves (h/t Tottenham Hotspur) one of the best young players in world football for a song.

The deal will make the Dutchman one of the expensive signings of the Lilywhites’ history. The 22-year-old is reportedly set to be among the top earners of the club, possibly behind newly-appointed skipper Cristian Romero, who signed a new deal earlier this month.

Simons wanted to leave Leipzig after a difficult last season and play in the Premier League , and Spurs have made his dream come true. They can offer him Champions League football too, as well as a regular starting berth in the injury absences of Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski. The ex-Paris Saint-Germain man can operate either in the No.10 role or as a left-winger, which could offer the Lilywhites some much-needed options and depth in attack.

Exceling in dribbling, vision, flair and shooting, Simons is a massive coup for Frank’s club. For a fee in the region of €60m, getting one of the talented attackers across Europe proves Levy and Co. can pull off smart deals. What will delight the fans most is that Tottenham have pipped Chelsea to the Netherlands international’s signing, showcasing the upwards trend the club has shown in recent months.
