Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pursued Jadon Sancho for years while at Manchester United, but the winger never found his footing after making the move to Old Trafford.
After finishing second in the 2020/21 campaign under Solskjaer, United were looking to build a squad capable of a proper title push. One of their first moves was to bring in Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, adding him to a forward line that already featured Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood. The hype was real, but it never materialised on the pitch.
Sancho’s loan spell at Borussia Dortmund last season did little to change opinions either. He played regularly for the German side but didn’t show enough consistency or improvement.
The door for a full-time return never really opened. So far, nothing has changed in his final season under contract with United. Even with injuries piling up for Aston Villa late this season, Sancho hasn’t become an automatic pick.
Solskjaer pointed out two areas where he felt Jadon Sancho was lacking early on – fitness and tempo.
No specific example stood out from those opening weeks of the 2021/22 season that directly supports Solskjaer’s claims about Jadon Sancho’s early struggles at Manchester United, although he did deal with an illness in September 2021.
The addition of Cristiano Ronaldo just before the start of that season also impacted his playing time and role within the squad.
Sancho’s early performances at Old Trafford didn’t live up to the hype, and frustration started to build among supporters.
Solskjaer faced growing calls to put Sancho in the starting lineup, but what wasn’t known at the time was that an infection had set him back just as he was getting started.
He said: “We wanted to take the next step — not move away from what we had, but add something different in the final third.
“He was unlucky, though. Before he joined, he went on holiday, as you do, and ended up getting an ear infection.
“He was in hospital and really struggled for his first 10 days or so before he could even start training with us.
Solskjaer went on to add: “That hasn’t really come out before. So, yeah, I never really got to play with him properly because by the time he was finding form again, I was already on my way out.”
Sancho returned on loan from Borussia Dortmund last season after being exiled by Ten Hag earlier in the campaign following a public dispute between the pair.
The return of Erik ten Hag has opened the door for a potential return of Sancho as part of pre-season this summer if Unai Emery decides against bringing him back permanently.
If not Aston Villa, there will be plenty of clubs who still hold faith that they can get the best out of him in their own system.
While Solskjaer offered some insight into why Sancho started slowly, his behaviour under Erik ten Hag left little room for sympathy.
Sancho’s public fallout with Ten Hag included a social media statement where he claimed he was being unfairly singled out. It was an unprofessional move and signalled the beginning of the end for his time at Old Trafford.
During his loan spell, Sancho also made a comment on Marcus Rashford’s post, replying “freedom” – another example of the issues that followed him off the pitch.
An ear infection might explain why things didn’t click right away, but it doesn’t account for what happened in the months and years that followed. That responsibility falls squarely on Sancho.
