Tottenham Hotspur are set to make Xavi Simons one of their highest paid players amidst serious interest from Chelsea

It has been a summer of ups and downs for Tottenham Hotspur, as new boss Thomas Frank continues to search for reinforcements.

The Lilywhites faced public embarrassment recently after getting snubbed by Eberechi Eze at the 11th hour. Daniel Levy’s sluggish negotiations with Crystal Palace to find an agreement for Eze allowed bitter rivals Arsenal to swoop in and the hijack the deal, luring the England midfielder to the Emirates Stadium.

Spurs have been working behind the scenes to bring in a creative midfielder following James Maddison’s injury. The Tottenham star’s untimely serious knee injury has made signing a new No.10 a priority as the clock ticks on. This has seen the north Londoners switch their focus towards signing RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons.

Tottenham pip Chelsea to the signing of Xavi Simons

Tottenham have been long-term admirers of Xavi Simons, but it was Chelsea who had agreed personal terms with the RB Leipzig star.

For some reason or the other, the deal had stalled. Taking notice of that, Spurs decided to make their move and submitted a bid to RB Leipzig. The 22-year-old had arrived in London on Thursday to make a decision on his future amid interest from both Tottenham and Chelsea.

Now, according to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Spurs are prepared to match the Blues’ offer for Simons, and the player is ‘really excited’ to join Thomas Frank’s side. Chelsea offered the player somewhere between £180,000-200,000-per-week, but the Lilywhites have decided to match it. The Club World Cup champions were giving him a lengthy seven or eight year contract; Levy would offer the Netherlands international a five-year deal.

“I’m told that Simons is really excited by Spurs and when told about them, he did not have to wait to say yes,” TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey revealed.

“Spurs could very well end up with the number 10 they thought was out of their range just a few weeks ago.”

Simons set to become one of Tottenham’s highest-paid players

The report adds Simons is set to become one of the Tottenham’s highest-paid players. He replaces former captain Son Heung-min, who was on around £190,000-per-week– behind newly-appointed skipper Cristian Romero, who recently signed a new contract.

Levy’s wage offers to attract top talents across the world have often been criticised, but on this occasion, the Tottenham honcho has done well to pip Chelsea to Simons’ signature. One of the brightest young talents in Europe, the Lilywhites landing the Dutchman would be a coup of sorts.

Should he join, the Dutchman is expected to take over as the No.10 in Frank’s side, with Maddison sidelined for an extended period. He scored 10 goals and supplied seven assists in the Bundesliga last season, demonstrating the 22-year-old is more than capable of creating and score goals at an equal measure.
