Owen has ‘seen enough’ to know £200k p/w man won’t make it at Utd – but he could be ‘exceptional’ elsewhere
PA Images/Alamy Images

Michael Owen is of the belief that Antony has already proven he isn’t suited to the Premier League and is best off taking his exploits elsewhere.

In fairness, it’s a sentiment that will undoubtedly be echoed by the Manchester United faithful, as you’d struggle to find any supporters who still wholeheartedly believe Antony can succeed at Old Trafford – primarily because he’s already had two full seasons to do so.

It’s a sad state of affairs for both parties; the player now finds himself as an outcast in Erik ten Hag’s long-term plans, while the club are letting a signing they forked out £86 million for just waste away on the bench. If United did try to sell him when the window reopened, they’d be well aware that they won’t recuperate anywhere near the ludicrous fee.

The 24-year-old had grown accustomed to being a certain starter in his maiden campaign. Yet, in his sophomore term, his weekly lacklustre performances saw him eventually fall behind younger counterpart – and Carrington graduate – Alejandro Garnacho in the pecking order.

Since 2024/2025 began, Amad Diallo has also cemented his place above Antony, which has led to the Brazilian making one single Premier League appearance in the opening five matches: a one-minute cameo off the bench against Brighton and Hove Albion.

United and Antony just haven’t worked out, says ex-Red

Weighing in on the winger’s substandard United tenure thus far, Owen told the Metro: “I haven’t seen enough positive play from Antony since he’s been there to warrant him starting every game for Manchester United

“He’s obviously a very talented boy and they’ve paid a load of money for him so they’ll be absolutely desperate to get a tune out of him and to get him happy and playing. He might be exceptional in a different team, but this current Manchester United team, granted, it’s very hard for any player to really shine, as we’ve seen with recent buys over the last five or 10 years.

“But if he started in a game next week, I wouldn’t be thinking, right I’m really excited to see. I think I’ve seen enough to think that it might be a struggle for him, but whether that’s a change of manager, a change of team, or a change of something will spark something else again. That’s for the future.”

Cristiano Ronaldo takes subtle dig at late Pele after claiming that he wants to score 1000 goals on ‘video’

Cristiano Ronaldo sits at the very top in terms of scoring goals. The Portuguese superstar is currently on 899 goals after converting a sublime free-kick against Al-Fayha on Tuesday. The No.7 recently claimed in an interview that the wants to first hit 900 goals before going on to make it 1000. Surprisingly, the player also said that he wants his goals on video so that he can ‘prove’ them as well. Speaking to former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo opened up about his goals in the ‘final’ stretch of his career. After making it clear that he wants to hang up his boots at Al-Nassr, a recent social media post stated that he’s ‘just getting started’. My challenge is to reach 1000 goals. With one difference, all the goals I score will be on video so that I can prove them. Cristiano Ronaldo said (via YouTube/@UR Cristiano) The Portuguese forward is in red-hot form and is one goal away from hitting the unbelievable record of 900 goals. Al-Nassr take on Al-Ahli on the 13th of September after the international break. Cristiano Ronaldo set to be honored by UEFA for becoming all-time top scorer With the Champions League set to inaugurate its first edition with the new format, UEFA announced that it plans to honor Cristiano Ronaldo for his incredible journey in the competition. From winning the competition an unbelievable five times to scoring the most goals in the same, Ronaldo is by far the ‘most’ successful player to have been part of the Champions League. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin praised the forward and named him as one of the brightest stars in the constellation that is UEFA. Ronaldo has scored a record 140 goals from 183 appearances for Porto, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus. Recently, former United teammate Rio Ferdinand revealed that the No.7 is still driven and motivated to do his best at the age of 39. Ferdinand recalled on Ronaldo’s YouTube channel how the latter used to text him and say that he’d have done better if he was placed in the same situation. While age may have begun to catch up with the forward, it is clear that Ronaldo has no plans to hang up his boots soon. Rest assured, fans can bank on the player to prove people wrong for years to come.

Aaron Boone Makes Feelings Clear After Yankees’ Big Trade

The New York Yankees didn't come into the season with the strongest third base situation, and it only got worse over time. They converted traditional second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the hot corner after getting him at the Trade Deadline last season and installed a timeshare with him, DJ LeMahieu, Oswald Peraza, and Oswaldo Cabrera there in 2025. However, the latter player broke his ankle on May 12, and the Yankees released the now 37-year-old LeMahieu on July 10. Chisholm was primarily back at second at that point, so this left Peraza and Jorbit Vivas as their only true remaining third basemen. With Peraza hitting .147 and Vivas hitting .164, it was clear what the team's biggest need was. That's why it acquired veteran third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies on Friday. New York manager Aaron Boone gave his thoughts about the 30-year-old before Friday's bout with the Philadelphia Phillies, via SNY. "I know there's real offensive potential there. I know he's had real offensive success, as well as some struggles there over the last calendar year or two," he said. "It seems like over the last month he's really started swinging the bat like he's capable of. He can impact the ball, he can control the strike zone, he's had some swing-and-misses that have probably hurt him a little bit." "But then he can really defend over there," he continued. "The handful of times that we've played against them that I watch him, you're like, 'That's what it should look like over there.' He moves really well and has that prototypical good third base thing." McMahon is slashing .217/.314/.403 with 16 homers and 35 RBI over 100 games this season. He also has a .978 fielding percentage and six errors. Right-handed pitcher Will Warren (6-5, 4.91 ERA) will start for the Yankees against Phillies right-hander Taijuan Walker (3-5, 3.75 ERA) on Friday.

‘In What World Does This Make Sense?????’: Oilers and $63M Forward

According to some, throw out the idea that the Edmonton Oilers should pursue Max Pacioretty. A veteran forward who has earned over $63 million over the course of his NHL career has yet to sign an NHL contract and was recently mentioned in a post by David Staples as a possible fit. In a recent post, the Journal noted, “All of the top NHL unrestricted free agents have already signed contracts, but there’s one big name player still available that makes good sense for the Edmonton Oilers to pursue.” Responses have been varied, with a few quite vocal about the Oilers not following Staples’ advice. “In what world does this make sense?????” writes a commenter on a recent post for The Hockey Writers. Another commenter wrote, “Pacioretty is a good journeyman player but he is injury prone now, late in his career. Oilers might be lucky to get 40 games out of him. They should look elsewhere instead of taking a chance on Patches.” Tyler Yaremchuk of Oilers Nation chimed in and said, “He scored five goals in 37 games last year with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Can’t stay healthy, very old, very slow.” Yaremchuk then went on a rant, listing several Oilers forwards who would be better than Pacioretty. What About Pacioretty on a PTO? Is there any reason that a team that is looking to get younger and faster, and move out depth pieces that were older and less productive than expected, would revert back to last summer’s strategy? It seems like an odd choice on the surface. Something would have to happen that would make giving Pacioretty a look risk-free. That means only a PTO. Even at that point, should he agree, it would require him to be willing to sign a two-way contract for the league minimum.

All signs point to Yankees moving on from Anthony Volpe

All signs point to Yankees moving on from Anthony Volpe

With the trade for Ryan McMahon now complete, it would seem New York Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman has fulfilled one of his three priorities. He can now cross third base off the list, which leaves the rotation and bullpen as his remaining priorities. However, according to one Yankees writer, Cashman might not be done with the infield. Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reported this after the McMahon trade: “The Yankees may not be done adding to their infield. A team source said the Yankees are interested in adding a right-handed hitter who could play the infield.” Kirschner adds that the Yankees have had interest in Willi Castro and Amed Rosario. But the question now is, how would another player fit in the Yankees’ infield? Needless to say, Paul Goldschmidt and Jazz Chisholm Jr. aren’t going anywhere, and McMahon is just getting there. That leaves the low-hanging fruit. Anthony Volpe has been at the center of controversy all this season. His 13 errors, many of which had come at make-or-break moments, amount to the second-highest total in the game. In addition, his bat has not been able to compensate, hitting .214/.286/.407 with 14 home runs. There was always a lot to like about Volpe. He won a Gold Glove in his rookie year, his power has always been promising and his speed is nothing to scoff at. Unfortunately, his glove has become a liability and his speed has also produced very few results. Volpe has swiped just 10 bags in 17 attempts. His power is the one thing that still has some upside, but it hasn’t been enough to justify a spot in the lineup. Both Castro and Rosario have been far more productive at the plate this season than Volpe. Kirschner doesn’t clarify how serious the Yankees are in their pursuit of another infielder, but that most likely isn’t available information. Having just turned 24, Volpe could still become the type of player that was expected from him as a top prospect. However, his recent performance has weighed heavily on his team’s efforts and it may be buying him a ticket out of the Bronx — or at least a spot on the bench.
