Oxford United have made their fourth signing of the January transfer window with the arrival of Nottingham Forest midfielder, Jamie McDonnell.
The 21-year-old joins up with Northern Ireland teammates Ciaron Brown, Brodie Spencer and Jamie Donley.
McDonnell joins for an undisclosed fee but it’s believed to be in the seven figures.
Having been recalled from a successful loan spell with Mansfield, Oxford have spent big to land the Forest midfielder.
The 21-year-old impressed during his time with the Stags and was a regular in Nigel Clough’s lineup. He was a standout performer in their FA Cup upset against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
He was also a key player during a previous loan spell at Colchester and was named the club’s Young Player of the Year after making 32 League Two appearances.
He joined Forest in 2020 but has failed to feature for the senior side.
Speaking after completing his move, McDonnell said: “I’m very excited to be here and to get started at Oxford United. It’s a club full of ambition, and that was really important to me as I sign a long-term deal.
“I feel I’ve learnt a lot from my loan spells and grown with every step I’ve taken so far. I’m ready to challenge myself at this level now and give everything for the team.
“I’m a midfielder who wants to be involved in all aspects of the game, work hard for the badge and keep improving. I can’t wait to play in front of the supporters and show what I can bring to the club.”
Oxford United head coach, Matt Bloomfield added: “Jamie is a really exciting young player and one we’re delighted to welcome to Oxford United. At every level he’s played, he’s stepped up and shown maturity, authority and a real understanding of the game that goes beyond his age.
“He has excellent quality in midfield, a strong work ethic and a real desire to improve. He’s already gained valuable experience in senior club and international football, and we believe he has a very big future here at the club.
“I’ve spent a lot of time with Ed Waldron and the recruitment department since arriving to secure the players we want to bring in during this window. Jamie is a player full of ambition and fight, and we agreed he is the right profile for what we need now, and going forward.”
