Manchester United could be set for an unexpected financial boost this summer, and it all revolves around a familiar name making serious noise in France once again.
Former United academy graduate Mason Greenwood is at the centre of a growing transfer battle, with ambitious Ligue 1 side Paris FC preparing a major move to lure him away from Olympique de Marseille, as reported by But! Football Club.
Backed by the powerful Arnault family and the Red Bull group, Paris FC are planning what could be a statement signing as they look to elevate their status, and Greenwood has emerged as their marquee target.
However, convincing Marseille will be far from straightforward.
The French giants are under no pressure to sell and have reportedly already deemed the initial proposal insufficient, especially given the structure of Greenwood’s current deal.
Marseille are protected by significant clauses, including a large percentage owed on any future sale, rising to as much as 65% under certain conditions, meaning they will only entertain offers that reflect his true value.
That is where United enter the picture.
When Mason Greenwood departed Old Trafford in 2024 following a loan spell at Getafe, the club ensured they retained a substantial sell-on clause, believed to be around 50%.
So any big-money move this summer would directly benefit United financially, a rare case of the club profiting without being directly involved in negotiations.
And based on Greenwood’s form, interest is no surprise.
Since arriving in France, the 24-year-old has been prolific, registering 47 goals and 16 assists in just 77 appearances, including an impressive 25 goals and 10 assists this season alone.
That output has not only attracted Paris FC but also drawn attention from Juventus, setting up the possibility of a bidding war.
Complicating matters further is the situation at Marseille.
The club is entering a period of transition following the departure of manager Roberto De Zerbi, while Stephane Richard has stepped in as the new president after replacing Medhi Benatia.
Despite the changes, Marseille remain firm in their stance, Greenwood will not be sold cheaply, especially with his contract running until 2029.
From a United perspective, this is shaping up to be a win-win scenario.
The club has already moved on from the player, but his success elsewhere could now translate into a significant financial injection, funds that could be crucial as United prepare for a major rebuild.
