Paul Pogba has broken his silence on the reasons behind his exit from Manchester United, helping to provide supporters who may have had questions with clarity.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, the midfielder revealed that he decided that he was going to leave the club for the first time after the side’s clash with Blackburn Rovers in 2011.

Explaining it in its full context, Pogba stated: “I didn’t play until against Blackburn. That killed me.

“[Tom] Cleverley was injured. Scholesey wasn’t there. And he had no midfielders left. So I’m like: ‘I’m not going to start. It’s fine’.

“And he put Park and Rafael in midfield.

“And I remember I went to warm up in the first half. So I go first half, I go warm up. Second half – I warm up for like 17 minutes. I didn’t come on. I was like: ‘Nah’.”

Continuing his explanation, Paul Pogba added: “Clubs were already talking because I was going to finish my contract.

“And this day, I was like: ‘Yeah, I might leave. If they don’t believe in me, that I can play in this team, maybe I’ll go somewhere else and it will work’.”

The Frenchman would go onto join Juventus in the summer of 2012 and spent four years in Italy before returning to Manchester United in 2016.

Paul Pogba reviews second spell at Manchester United

Whilst revealing the main reason behind his initial move away from Old Trafford, Pogba also opened up on his second spell at the club which spanned from 2016 to 2022.

Speaking on the podcast about his first season back at the club, the midfielder stated: “We had a great team, Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] came, [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan also – we had a really good team.

“But in one team, you have 11 players, and I’m sure that I should have done more, but I don’t know if I could have done more.”

The 33-year-old would go onto make 226 appearances for the club in his second spell at the club before leaving the club in the 2022 summer transfer window.

Pogba’s career post-Manchester United

The midfielder joined Juventus in July 2022 from Manchester United on a free transfer with 12 appearances coming in his two years at the club before his contract was terminated by the Italian outfit in November 2024.

Pogba went onto join AS Monaco last year although injuries have limited him to just four appearances.

With him making his return to action after 126 days out against Paris FC, Paul Pogba will be hoping that he can play more consistently both at the end of this season and in next season.
