Sunderland could cash in on Tottenham Hotspur target Dennis Cirkin in the January transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur gave emphasis on improving the attacking unit in Thomas Frank’s first transfer window as the club’s new head coach. They did manage to address the creativity issue with the acquisition of Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig and added depth to the forward department with Randal Kolo Muani’s loan signing from Paris Saint-Germain.

Having fully focused on addressing the creativity issue and attacking depth, the Lilywhites failed to significantly bolster their defensive unit. The Europa League winners were interested in signing Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin in the past transfer window. In fact, they had reached out to Sunderland over the signing of the former England youth international in a bid to fulfill their homegrown quota in the Champions League.

However, a move didn’t materialise and Spurs were forced to name a reduced 22-man squad for the league phase of the Champions League.

Former Sunderland chief scout expects Dennis Cirkin to be sold in January

Having started his career with Tottenham, Dennis Cirkin decided to join Sunderland in 2021. He played a crucial role in the Black Cats’ promotion to the Premier League last season. Unfortunately, the 23-year-old has been injured since the pre-season and has not been able to make his Premier League debut.

Sunderland had a busy summer transfer window, particularly reinforcing the left-sided defensive options with the acquisitions of Reinaldo and Arthur Masuaku. This suggests Cirkin could struggle to regain his first-team spot in Regis Le Bris’ side once he recovers from injury. Plus, the Dublin-born talent is into the last 10 months of his contract, leaving his future at the Stadium of Light further in doubt.

Now, former Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown feels that the Black Cats could cash in Cirkin in January to raise some funds rather than lose him on a free transfer at the end of the season.

“If the right offer comes in January, I expect Sunderland will be prepared to let him go because the way they’re playing right now, it’ll be hard for him to get back into the side,” Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider.

“I think he’s a good enough player to get a good move in January if Sunderland decide that’s the best course of action, because they’ll want to raise some money from him.

“If his recovery goes to plan, I don’t doubt there will be interest rather than having to wait on the sidelines until the end of the year when he’d move on a free.”

Tottenham get boost to sign Cirkin

Tottenham’s current left-back options are Destiny Udogie and Djed Spence, with the latter having started the season in good form, and Cirkin would provide further valuable depth. The former academy graduate is open to returning to his boyhood club, and with Sunderland expected to cash him in during the winter window, Spurs’ chances of landing Cirkin has been boosted.

The Sunderland star, if signed, would not only be an option to challenge Udogie for the left-back spot but also help in boosting the north London club’s homegrown quota in the Champions League. Let’s see how the situation around Cirkin develops, and should the Wearside-side decide to sell him in January, we must be all over his signature.
