Tottenham Hotspur handed fresh hope to sign Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo as release clause details emerge

Tottenham Hotspur have already exceeded early expectations under Thomas Frank following the strong start they have enjoyed in the new season. They want to compete strongly on all four fronts as the Lilywhites look to build on last season’s Europa League success.

However, despite their impressive start, there remain a few glaring issues that Spurs must address in the upcoming transfer window. Chief among them is the lack of a dynamic left-winger, someone who could come in and elevate the quality of Tottenham’s attack.

At this moment, Thomas Frank is heavily reliant on Wilson Odobert and Brennan Johnson to provide the goods from the left flank. Both Odobert and Johnson have struggled to provide the cutting edge required to unlock rigid defences. Summer signing Xavi Simons has also been tried in that position but it’s become clear that he is at his creative best when operating centrally as a No.10.

Antoine Semenyo’s secret release clause at Bournemouth

Tottenham have identified Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth as the ideal long-term replacement for the departed Son Heung-min. The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with several top Premier League clubs including Spurs, though it appears unlikely that Bournemouth would sanction his sale midway through the campaign unless their £70m asking price is met.

However, according to a report from talkSPORT, Antoine Semenyo has a release clause in his new contract. The Ghanaian international held talks with Tottenham and Manchester United before signing a lucrative new five-year deal at the Vitality Stadium, committing his future to the Cherries.

The London-born star enjoyed his best season in a Bournemouth shirt in 2024/25, racking up 13 goals and seven assists in 42 appearances. And he has done little to stop interest from growing this season, scoring six goals and providing three assists in nine games thus far.

The report adds that the Cherries wanted to keep hold of Semenyo at any cost after losing several key players over the summer and felt the only realistic way of tying their star winger down to a new contract is by inserting a buyout clause. The exact terms of the release clause still remains a secret but having one suggests the south coast outfit know it is almost inevitable that Semenyo would ultimately move on to bigger and better pastures.

Boost for Tottenham to land Semenyo

Semenyo’s progress at Bournemouth since his January 2023 arrival from Bristol City has been remarkable. He had a cracking 2024/25 campaign and has shown signs this season of getting more goal contributions, with nine (G/A) in seven league appearances already. The 25-year-old’s adaptability across forward roles, coupled with his speed, physicality, power, creativity and goal-scoring prowess, makes him an ideal fit in Frank’s dynamic pressing system.

The Bournemouth talisman has emerged as an interesting option to elevate Spurs’ attacking unit. He’d be an instant upgrade on the likes of Odobert, Tel and Johnson, as well as give Frank an alternative up top when required. Semenyo would bring the much-needed cutting edge to their attack required to unlock low blocks and deep defences.

While the Cherries would love to keep him for a long time, they know it is unrealistic considering the rising interest in the Premier League. Thus, a move away from the Vitality Stadium in the summer of 2026 appears logical, but Spurs cannot afford to wait until then. Armed with the fresh capital injection by majority owners ENIC, the north Londoners must make a statement in the English top-flight by going all out on Semenyo. And the latest revelation of a release clause in his new contract should only add to their appetite of signing Andoni Iraola’s most valuable asset.
