Manchester United are scouting Partizan Belgrade wonderkid Ognjen Ugresic as a potential successor to Bruno Fernandes, depending on his development. The 18-year-old has earned a spot in Partizan’s senior squad this season, displaying immense quality and potential as a midfielder.

United have endured a poor campaign in the Premier League, currently 14th in the table after 34 games this season. The Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag and appointed Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP, hoping to drastically improve next season.

At the same time, United have an eye on the distant future, as depending on the inflated market proved costly. The Red Devils have made many high-value signings who have failed to live up to the expectations of the club.

Meanwhile, United have continued to do better when it comes to developing young talents, shaping them according to their needs. Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Amad Diallo are the prime examples of that strategy working in their favour amid losses.

Furthermore, the Red Devils signed Leny Yoro last season, a young centre-back with immense potential and the ability to adapt. Amorim’s style of play requires adaptation, which is easier for a young player to do compared to older players already comfortable with a particular style of play.

Ostoja Stjepanovic, the agent of Partizan midfielder Ugresic, told Nemzeti Sport (via Manchester Evening News) that Man United and several Serie A clubs have scouted his client. He said:

“I can confirm that the winter press reports are based on reality, there is interest in him from many places: not only Manchester United observers are following his development, but also Serie A clubs. However, it would be too early for him to switch, he could get the playing opportunities he needs to advance to the next level at Partizan next season.”

Stjepanovic further compared Ugresic’s style of play to Jude Bellingham and Paul Pogba’s style of play. He highlighted the 18-year-old’s technique, speed and physical presence, along with vision, eagerness to work hard and game intelligence.

With Fernandes at 30 years of age, the timing could suit United to observe Ugresic’s progress as a potential successor. The 18-year-old has made 23 appearances in all competitions for Partizan this season, scoring three goals and providing one assist.
