Mason Greenwood has continued to generate headlines in France following a series of developments both on and off the pitch since his move to Ligue 1.
The forward, who joined Olympique de Marseille in the summer of 2024 after leaving Manchester United following a loan spell at Getafe, has remained a prominent figure around the club.
In recent months, Greenwood has also been linked with a potential move to Saudi Arabia as interest in the attacker continues to emerge from abroad.
His situation has also attracted attention from supporters.
Mason Greenwood was recently at the centre of protests from Marseille ultras following the club’s cup exit to Toulouse on penalties, with tensions surrounding the team spilling into the stands.
Now, fresh details have emerged about internal tensions at the club around the time of his arrival.
According to French outlet La Provence, a police incident report was filed following and internal dispute between senior figures at Marseille during the 2024 summer transfer window.
The report claims the confrontation involved sporting director Medhi Benatia and Cecilia Barontini.
Barontini was part of the club’s senior leadership structure at the time after being appointed to oversee administrative operations alongside Alban Juster under then-president Pablo Longoria.
It was reported that Cecilia Barontini opposed several sporting decisions made by the club’s hierarchy, including the signing of Greenwood.
The disagreement is said to have escalated over several weeks before culminating in a heated confrontation inside Longoria’s office at the club’s La Commanderie training complex.
Following the incident, Barontini reportedly filed an official incident report with police documenting the altercation.
The same report also claims that Barontini raised concerns internally regarding the conduct of Ali Zarrak, a figure believed to be closely associated with Benatia within Marseille’s sporting structure.
While the details surrounding the altercation remain limited, the situation highlights the internal tensions that surrounded Marseille’s recruitment decisions during that transfer window – including the deal that ultimately brought Greenwood to the club from Manchester United.
