Jakub Kiwior, who’s on loan at Porto from Arsenal, played the entire match in their Europa League opener against RB Salzburg.

Porto left it late to secure all three points, with William Gomes hitting a superb strike from distance in the 93rd minute to seal the win.

In a tight contest where chances were hard to come by, both defences stood firm. It was a night where mistakes were few and far between.

Kiwior has already drawn praise for his early performances in Portugal, and his first European appearance for Porto added further positive reviews from local media.

Kiwior made the switch to Porto on deadline day, signing a loan deal that includes a €27 million obligation to buy. The move will become permanent next summer, and early signs suggest he is fitting in well.

He lined up alongside Jan Bednarek at the heart of Porto’s defence for their match against Salzburg, and put in a solid performance. FotMob gave him an 8.1 rating – the highest of any player on the pitch – highlighting both his composure in possession and his defensive contributions.

The praise was not limited to statistical outlets, either. Portuguese media were also quick to highlight his strong start.

A Bola gave him a seven out of ten, noting: “He knows the Bednarek twin like no other player, and as a result, he’s been putting in some very consistent performances. A great first half, showing intensity and imposing play, blocking open paths to Diogo Costa’s goal.”

Record matched that rating and singled out his calmness under pressure, another sign that Kiwior is settling into his new surroundings quickly.

Kiwior’s steady start raises questions over Arsenal sale fee

Kiwior has hit the ground running at Porto, picking up right where he left off last season. It looks more like this is just who he is now.

He has always been good with the ball at his feet and handles himself physically. He looks comfortable at this level and could probably play higher up too.

The market set the fee Porto paid at about £23.6 million – a figure Arsenal could not push much higher due to limited demand from elsewhere.

Conversely, by holding out and only sanctioning a loan departure, the club could have commanded a considerably higher fee next summer.
