Rumour emerges suggesting Lucas Bergvall could be fit to feature for Tottenham in the Europa League final in Bilbao next week

Tottenham Hotspur will face Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final at the San Mames in Bilbao next week.

In contrary to their disastrous Premier League season, Spurs have performed very well in Europe and thoroughly deserve to be playing the grand finale. The players showed a certain doggedness and steel in their performance levels during the return legs of the quarter-final and semi-final against Eintracht Frankfurt and Bodo/Glimt, respectively, which was a breath of fresh air for the fans.

Despite beating Manchester United thrice this season, completing a quartet of victories over the Mancunian giants would be extremely difficult for Ange Postecoglou’s side. And one of the Australian’s big worries has been the injury situation, which has started worsening at the most decisive juncture of the season.

One of the injury issues that the Tottenham boss has to contend with is of Lucas Bergvall. The youngster has been ruled out for the Europa League final after damaging ligaments in his ankle during the final training session ahead of the semi-final first leg against Bodo/Glimt. However, just a week before the final, Tottenham have been offered a positive update about the midfielder’s fitness.

Marcus Buckland of The Tottenham Way podcast has now claimed that he’s heard a positive rumour about the fitness of Lucas Bergvall. He revealed that there is still some chance that the Sweden international would be involved in some capacity against Man United in Bilbao.

“Lucas Bergvall, how I would love to wake up on the morning of the final and he’s okay,” Marcus Buckland said on the latest episode of The Tottenham Way.

“I heard a rumour yesterday – and I don’t know if there’s any substance to it – suggesting that Bergvall may have a chance to be involved in the final, but that is hearsay.”

Very recently, Postecoglou admitted it is “unlikely” that Bergvall recovers from an ankle ligament damage in time for the final. If the central midfielder can recover in time and be involved in the final in some capacity, it would be a massive lift for Ange and his team.

The Stockholm-born talent has been a rare bright spot in the Lilywhites’ side, playing a key role in their Europa League run-in to the final. He has racked up 45 appearances in his debut season at N17, netting a goal and supplying four assists. The injury to Bergvall has come at a worst possible time, although following Buckland’s revelation, fans will still hold some hope of seeing him feature next week.
