Postecoglou privately knew Tottenham overhaul was virtually impossible

The Australian took charge of the North London side in summer 2023, following a highly successful two-year spell at Celtic where he claimed five domestic trophies including two Scottish Premiership title wins which meant that the club were back in the Champions League.

Postecoglou guided Spurs to a fifth-place finish in his debut Premier League season, but the team dropped significantly to 17th in his second campaign, amid a terrible run of injuries to just about all of his top players.

Nevertheless, their recent Europa League victory – ending a 17-year wait for silverware – was a moment of major celebration for the club.

However, just a little over two weeks after the historic triumph against Manchester United in Bilbao, Postecoglou was dismissed from his role by Tottenham’s trigger happy CEO Daniel Levy, the little man who makes the big call every couple of years to sack his manager.

Football.london has now reported that soon after starting at Spurs, Postecoglou ‘privately felt’ that despite his attempts to bring change, it was unlikely to fully materialise. At 59 years-old, the ex-Celtic boss is currently unemployed for the first time since 2018, prior to his move to J. League club Yokohama F. Marinos. Only time will tell where Ange will take his next job.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are nearing the appointment of Brentford manager Thomas Frank as their new head coach, with a deal expected to be completed by the weekend. Discussions between the two clubs are continuing and moving forward well, with anticipation rising that Frank may be officially announced as Postecoglou’s replacement within the next two days.

Brentford will receive compensation for 51-year-old Frank, who took charge in 2016 following a period at Brondby, with reports suggesting Tottenham will pay around £10 million to secure his release.

In the 2024-25 Premier League campaign, Brentford secured 10th place, finishing seven spots and 18 points ahead of Postecoglou’s Tottenham, who languished in 17th with only 11 wins from 38 matches.

Ramon Vega, the former Celtic and Tottenham defender, earlier this week discussed the possibility of Ange returning to Celtic one day but for now he believes that the Europa League winner will be in big demand south of the border and will end up at another Premier League club next season.
