Tottenham Hotspur have made a sensational bid to sign James Wilson from Scottish Premiership outfit Hearts in a major deadline day transfer swoop.

Previously, the bitter North London rivals Arsenal had been in talks with the Scottish youngster to sign a loan deal, but Spurs have beaten them to the punch.

The deal was confirmed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Fabrizio Romano, who wrote: “James Wilson to Tottenham, here we go! Deal in place for Scottish 18 year old striker to join #THFC project.

“Arsenal were offering a trial while Spurs offer loan deal with buy option clause now agreed with Hearts. Medical happening now with formal steps next.”

The deal has yet to be formally completed, however. Spurs will have until 11pm to do so, as the Scottish transfer window stays open until then, as opposed to the English transfer deadline of 7pm. Everything is expected to go through smoothly as things stand.

Why did James Wilson join Tottenham instead of Arsenal?

It seems that Wilson opted to join Spurs over Arsenal because of the Lilywhites’ willingness to sign him outright. Arsenal were only offering him a trial – it had been suspected that the Gunners would include a mandatory fee as part of his proposed loan deal, but this is not the case.

Therefore, it makes sense for Wilson to join Spurs under these circumstance. Thomas Frank’s men may be in far worse shape than Arsenal as this stand, but the 18-year-old is definitely one for the future – he won’t be expected to turn Tottenham’s season around.

What will James Wilson bring to Tottenham?

A composed, natural finisher, Wilson is a rarity in the modern game. While his movement is excellent, his cool nature in front of goal is his greatest attribute.

Additionally, he is also deceptively strong, being able to hold the ball up against even the toughest of centre-halves. Furthermore, he possesses a great first touch – not many players of his age have such a complete skillset.

Wilson has plenty of experience in the Scottish Premiership for Hearts, having made over 30 appearances in the league during his fledgling career. Across this period of time, he has scored five league goals and has notched up a solitary assist.

The Scottish Premiership might be of a much lower standard than the Premier League, but its brutal and taxing physicality cannot be denied. Likewise, the Premier League can also be extremely physical at times and has proven too much for some of the game’s greatest legends.

Wilson, on the other hand, will not be hampered by this potential stumbling block. He knows how to compete amongst some of football’s roughest defenders – and as the results suggest, he can even thrive against them.

The Edinburgh native certainly isn’t ready to light up the Premier League just yet, but Tottenham may have gotten their hands on a real home-grown gem here. With so many strings to his bow and at such a young age, he has a glittering future in the world of football.
