Previewing NYCFC’s make-or-break game with LAFC

When New York City FC returns home to Queens this weekend, fans might be ready to be up in arms if the match does not go well.  The Pigeons are returning from a terrible three-game road trip, in which the team went 0-2-1.  They should have won against Atlanta United and Chicago Fire FC, but those games ended in a draw and a loss, respectively.  Then, the match against Inter Miami CF ended in an expected loss, but despite the lack of goals, the Boys in Blue played decently well.

So, can NYCFC turn things around when they face Los Angeles FC?  The trend of the 2026 season of dropping points, and the poor 4-6-4 home record, would say otherwise.  But LAFC has a 3-6-6 road record, so perhaps the Queens team can find a way to win.  Plus, the California team was recently beaten by Sporting Kansas City, who is in last place in the Western Conference.  And while they have mostly been a top side in the past, this season, one can argue that they are just average compared to previous years.

Meanwhile, if NYCFC limits mistakes and keeps the lead if they get one, then that will increase their chance of winning.  While the postseason is starting to feel like a dream that will not come true, at the very least, winning against a team like LAFC will make fans happy, even for a little while.

But this is a make-or-break game. Anything less than a win will likely see the supporters boo Pascal Jansen and his players, which would be deserved.  This team is too talented to be where they are, which has been repeated often over the last few months.  But if they lose terribly, then they will deserve every boo raining down from the crowd.  After all, it is New York, and fans will make their feelings known.
