One of the tournament favourites, PSG, is set to take on a struggling Liverpool side in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, with the first leg of the round of eight being played in Paris on Wednesday.

PSG have an advantage over Liverpool, as they beat the side on penalties in last year’s round of 16, which ultimately led them to their first-ever Champions League title.

Since the last year’s round of 16 clash, the two sides have set off on different trajectories.

The 2025-26 season has been wayward for Liverpool as they lost an FA Cup encounter against Manchester City 4-0.

Arne Slot’s side has been struggling going into the round of 16 match against one of the best teams in the league.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has said that they admit the game against PSG is going to be “very difficult”. However, he added that his side needed to lift themselves up against the French side.

“But we have a responsibility, not only to ourselves but especially to the fans, and if we want to make something out of this season, we have to try and do something special in the next three games,” he said, with the Champions League tie taking place on either side of an awkward clash with Fulham.

"As a matter of fact, now PSG are waiting for us. It will be so tough again. So we have to be ready mentally as soon as possible,” Van Dijk added.

The confidence that PSG is bringing against struggling Liverpool is set to play a decisive role, however, given what Liverpool has achieved in the past four years.
