Ramsbottom United officially sign former Manchester United defender

Manchester United have always been known for a great history of youth development.

Whether it has been George Best or Sir Bobby Charlton many moons ago, or the Class of 92, there have always been players to excel from their academy.

Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are two of the most recent examples.

One of Rashford’s former teammates has made the headlines today, in what has been a contrast of careers since their youth days.

On the official website of non-league Ramsbottom United, they confirmed the signing of defender Macauley Wilson.

Wilson was part of the United academy until the age of 16 and grew up alongside Rashford.

He failed to make the grade when he turned 16 but he has had an impressive lower league career.

The 28-year old joins Ramsbottom with plenty of lower league experience, having played for Blackpool, Fylde and Bury, as well as spending six years with Bamber Bridge.

He was also captain for half of his spell with Bamber Bridge.

His most notable moment came in the 2022/23 play off semi-final against Gainsborough Trinity, where he scored the winning penalty.

His leadership and experience was praised by Ramsbottom manager Steve Wilkes.

“After speaking to him and hearing how excited he is to get started I’m delighted that we’ve got him over the line”, said Wilkes.

“He’s also great in the changing room which will help the young lads in the squad.”

Wilson also spoke of his delight at the move.

“I’m looking forward to the new challenge after taking some time out of football,” said Wilson.

“I’ve had some good conversations with the gaffer Steve who sold it to me, Rob, Ritchie and I know quite few players too.

“They are good group of lads whether that’s from playing with them or against them and I’m hoping to come in and help the club reach the end goal which is promotion”.

Macauley Wilson joined Rasmbottom with the club in third place, seven points behind top spot.
