Rangers want Manchester United right back

Manchester United’s summer has been dominated by senior arrivals, but there has also been a strong focus on the next generation coming through the academy.

Michael Carrick has regularly invited several youngsters to train alongside the first team since he became manager last season, giving supporters an early glimpse of the club’s future.

While some academy prospects are edging closer to senior football at Old Trafford, others face important decisions about where the next stage of their development will take place.

One highly-rated youngster could now be set for an unexpected move.

Manchester United right-back monitored by Rangers

According to the Daily Mail, teenage full-back James Overy is attracting interest ahead of the new season, with a Manchester United departure now a genuine possibility.

The Daily Mail reports that the Australian is being monitored by multiple clubs, including from Rangers and interest is also coming from the A-League in Australia.

James Overy first caught United’s attention after impressing with non-league side Newton Abbot Spurs, before the Reds moved quickly to sign him in 2024.

Since arriving at Carrington, the defender has continued his development within the academy setup.

Last season, he featured 21 times in the Under-18 Premier League, establishing himself as one of the more promising young defenders in United’s youth ranks.

Although he is yet to make his competitive senior debut, Overy has already trained with Michael Carrick’s first-team squad on several occasions.

His progress has also been recognised internationally.

Back in March, Overy received a call-up from Australia for their fixtures against China, another sign that his reputation continues to grow beyond Old Trafford.

Whether United decide to keep hold of the youngster or allow him to continue his development elsewhere remains to be seen, but with clubs in both Scotland and Australia now monitoring his situation closely, James Overy is another academy player whose future could become one to watch before the transfer window closes.
