Rasmus Hojlund’s time at Napoli began with promise, but he has not managed to maintain that early form.
Manchester United decided to send Hojlund on loan this past summer after he slipped down the pecking order under Ruben Amorim.
The 22-year-old made an immediate impact in Naples, netting twice in his first four Serie A appearances. Antonio Conte was pleased with the start and there was genuine excitement about what he might bring across the season.
But a minor injury interrupted his momentum and since returning, Hojlund has not found the net in five consecutive matches.
Former Napoli striker Antonio Careca noted that nerves may be playing a part in the Dane’s recent dip in form.
Hojlund’s wait for a goal stretched on last week after he missed a penalty for Napoli, though Scott McTominay later scored to secure the win.
After United’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, the 22-year-old was in action for Napoli later that evening. He provided an assist for David Neres, whose goal was enough to beat Roma 1-0.
Speaking to TuttoMercatoWeb, Hojlund addressed his desire to find the net more consistently.
“Obviously, I’d like to score a lot of goals again and start doing so soon, but it’s important to always contribute to the team, and I’m happy to help.
“I try my best to be useful. I consider myself a team player: winning is more important than scoring goals,” he stated.
Even so, Hojlund’s loan spell at Napoli has generally been viewed as a success. It would make sense for everyone if the Italian club decide to activate his £38m buy option in the summer.
But United have already seen why they let him go. His overall output has been underwhelming.
Last season, Hojlund managed just four goals in the Premier League. He finished fourth in United’s 2024/25 top scorers list with 10 goals across all competitions.
This season, he is on course to surpass that tally, but only if he can put an end to his current drought soon.
United strengthened their forward line by signing Benjamin Sesko to replace Hojlund. And while Sesko has had a slow start of his own, he has still matched Hojlund’s goal tally in Italy this season.
