Tottenham Hotspur have now gone 17 years without winning a major trophy. The Lilywhites have suffered repeated heartbreaks in recent years and fans have also grown tired of waiting for the club to lift some silverware. But all that can possibly change now. Under Ange Postecoglou, Spurs have the chance of winning the Europa League this season.
The North London club has reached the final of the competition, and they are withing touching distance of lifting the trophy. Ange’s men take on Manchester United in the final, a team they have managed to beat three times already this season. Fans will hope that the club can go all the way and bring back a European trophy to N17 after 41 years.
No one would have thought that the Lilywhites would manage to reach the Europa League final this season. Spurs have endured a disastrous domestic campaign, and sit 17th in the Premier League. In fact, Ange Postecoglou was also given an ultimatum that his job would depend on the club’s performances in Europe. It is fair to say the Australian has managed to do the unthinkable, and he still has the chance of etching his name in the club’s history books.
Tottenham have registered 20 losses in the Premier League this season. They are sitting just a place above the relegation zone and it is comfortably the North London club’s worst ever season in the Premier League. However, Ange’s men still have the chance of playing Champions League football next season via the Europa League. Ange’s men just have to win the competition to ensure a place amongst the world’s top teams.
But ex-PL keeper Ben Foster has slammed Tottenham fans’ mentality as we head towards the Europa League final. Foster said on the Cycling GK Podcast (as transcribed by Tottenham News),
“Would you rather have this season, where you win the Europa League and get Champions League football, this horrific season, or one of the unreal seasons under Pochettino, where you get to the Champions League final and you’re top three or four in the Premier League.”
The former Man United keeper added,
“What season would you rather have? Most Tottenham fans would rather have this season where they win the Europa League. They want a trophy.”
Ben Foster was quick to question whether the Tottenham fans would prefer winning the Europa League and finishing 17th, or finish in the top four and reach the Champions League final? The former Premier League keeper then suggested that most of the Tottenham fans would rather win the Europa League trophy and prefer finishing 17th in the league table.
Spurs fans wanting to win a trophy should not be played down in any way. The North London club has gone 17 years without a trophy. So, if given an option, any sane fan would choose winning silverware over finishing in the top four in the Premier League. It is the trophy that eventually counts at the end of the day.
It is looking increasingly likely that Ange Postecoglou might lose his job at the end of the season, regardless of the outcome in the Europa League. The Australian will hope to end the season on a high and give the Tottenham fans a lasting memory by winning the Europa League. Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is the leading candidate to replace the 59-year-old at the helm for next season.
