Real Madrid eye surprise move for Arsenal midfielder

Real Madrid are reportedly considering a move for Mikel Merino, just as the Arsenal midfielder has reminded everyone of his remarkable goalscoring ability with Spain.

The 30-year-old has become something of a specialist at changing games from the bench, particularly for his country. Yet at Arsenal, where competition for midfield places is fierce, regular starts have proved difficult to come by.

Could that situation eventually tempt Merino into returning to La Liga?

Real Madrid links emerge after Merino’s Spain heroics

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Merino has emerged as a possible midfield option for Real Madrid ahead of future transfer windows.

The report suggests that Madrid are considering alternatives to strengthen their midfield, although there is currently no confirmed offer or negotiation between the clubs.

Interestingly, Madrid reportedly considered Merino before his move from Real Sociedad to Arsenal in 2024 but ultimately preferred a different profile.

His recent international performances certainly explain the renewed attention.

In Spain’s comeback against Croatia, Merino scored twice after coming off the bench, overturning a 1-0 deficit to secure a 2-1 victory.

The midfielder’s knack for arriving in dangerous attacking positions has become an increasingly valuable asset.

Would Arsenal really consider letting Merino leave?

Here’s where things become interesting.

With Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Bruno Guimarães, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Eberechi Eze and Martín Zubimendi all competing for midfield places, Merino faces a difficult battle for regular minutes.

He barely featured in Saturday’s dramatic comeback against Leeds United, while Guimarães came off the bench to score the winner.

However, would Arsenal really benefit from selling such a versatile player?

Merino offers height, experience, technical ability and an unexpected goalscoring threat. He can operate in midfield or further forward when circumstances demand it.

Arsenal are also competing on several fronts this season, making squad depth particularly important.

For me, there’s a considerable difference between a player struggling for regular starts and one Arsenal should consider selling.

Perhaps Arteta needs to find more opportunities for Merino rather than risk losing him.

What do you think, Gooners? Should Arsenal reject any approach from Real Madrid, or could a substantial offer persuade you to sell?
