Real Madrid in Pole Position to Sign ‘Outstanding’ Arsenal Target
action press

Florian Wirtz has reportedly emerged as a priority target for Real Madrid despite competition from Arsenal and Manchester City. The German midfielder has been enjoying an incredible run of form under Xabi Alonso this season.

Arsenal Handed Massive Blow in Florian Wirtz Race

A Messi-esque Star

Wirtz missed a significant chunk of the 2022-23 campaign with injury, raising serious concerns over his development. However, his return to action under Xabi Alonso this season has re-established his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising youngsters.

The 21-year-old has played a crucial role in Leverkusen’s treble push, registering 18 goals and 19 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions.

Speaking about the Arsenal-linked midfielder earlier this season, Alonso compared him to Lionel Messi, saying (via Goal): “Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes. Messi says: ‘You’re in a better position? Here, there you have the ball!’ It’s not always about making the most brilliant move but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That’s why he’s so good.”

The Next Step

Similar to other young stars who have gained prominence in the Bundesliga in recent years, Wirtz is also heavily linked with a move abroad. Bayern Munich are eager to keep him in the German top flight, but they face serious competition from several other elite sides.

According to Bild, Arsenal and Manchester City are both targeting Wirtz. However, Leverkusen’s “outstanding” youngster is closer to joining Real Madrid as Toni Kroos’ successor. Spanish outlet Marca has also confirmed Real Madrid’s interest, claiming Wirtz is the club’s top target for the 2025 summer.

The German international is expected to stay at Leverkusen for at least another season, with club CEO Fernando Carro recently revealing a whopping €150 million (£130m) price tag for his transfer.
