Between now and the end of the 2025/26 campaign, there is one objective that is on Michael Carrick’s mind: finish the season with Champions League football guaranteed.
Being back in Europe would not only financially benefit the club but it was also prove that the Red Devils are keen to fight on multiple fronts again.
Exiting the Carabao Cup at the hands of Grimsby Town before being booted out of the FA Cup by Brighton & Hove Albion is exactly what INEOS will want to avoid moving forward.
Whether it’s Carrick in the Old Trafford hot seat or someone with more experience such as Luis Enrique, Sir Jim Ratcliffe will be keen to back the manager this summer.
Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Senne Lammens have all been welcome additions to the squad.
And the club’s decision makers will be hoping for a similar success rate in the upcoming trading period.
The issues in the forward line have been addressed but there are still gaping holes in the engine room.
Especially with Casemiro leaving in the summer, Kobbie Mainoo will need a new midfield partner moving forwards.
Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have been linked with a move to Manchester, as has Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga.
The France international is of interest to a number of Premier League clubs, according to The Sun, and reports in Spain have revealed that Los Blancos will listen to offers.
Camavinga, still just 23 years of age, has played 213 times since his high-profile move from Stade Rennais in 2021.
But the 15-time winners of the Champions League are reportedly prepared to green light his departure in the summer.
That said, they’ve set a price tag of north of £50 million with Marca have suggested that anything less will not be listened to.
No longer high up on the pecking order in the Spanish capital, the combative midfielder has started just 17 matches for his employers in La Liga and the Champions League.
A move to Old Trafford, which would provide a starting spot week-in week-out, may be enticing as a result.
That said, though, the fact that he is currently under contract until the summer of 2029 means that Real Madrid are in position where they need to sell the midfielder.
