Astros Facing Jose Altuve Decision After Yordan Alvarez Update
The Houston Astros (72–58) are on pace to make the postseason for the ninth consecutive season, entering Sunday with a three-game lead in the AL West. A huge reason for the team’s success has once again been the face of the franchise, Jose Altuve. The 35-year-old veteran has been a driving force in the offense, posting a .278 batting average, .341 on-base percentage, .801 OPS, 22 home runs, and 64 RBIs across 126 games. His durability has been crucial for an Astros team that’s dealt with injuries to several key players—most notably left-handed slugger Yordan Alvarez, who’s been sidelined since May 2 with a fractured right hand. Yordan Alvarez Could Rejoin Astros During Upcoming Homestand On Sunday, an update surfaced on Alvarez’s potential return after he began his rehab assignment earlier this week. Manager Joe Espada announced that Alvarez could rejoin the big-league roster during the team’s upcoming homestand beginning Tuesday. "Presuming Yordan Alvarez comes out of today’s Double-A game feeling good, there is a “strong possibility” he rejoins the Astros during their homestand that starts on Tuesday, Joe Espada said," wrote The Athletic's Chandler Rome. Alvarez’s Return Creates Lineup Dilemma for Joe Espada This comes at a pivotal time for Houston, as they prepare for a playoff push and look to reinsert one of the most feared hitters in the league. Alvarez, a three-time All-Star, has gone 5-for-8 with three doubles and two walks in his first two rehab games for Double-A Corpus Christi. However, with Altuve primarily handling DH duties in Alvarez’s absence, Espada will need to decide who returns to the field full-time. Alvarez was already a defensive liability before the injury, making it unlikely he’ll see regular starts in left field. That would force Altuve back to second base full-time, which could be taxing on the aging veteran and potentially impact his offensive production. It would also push trade deadline acquisition Ramon Urias out of his current infield role, creating a ripple effect across the lineup. Alvarez’s return will undoubtedly inject power back into the Astros’ offense, but it also presents a challenge for Espada as he balances health, defense, and lineup continuity heading into October.
Steelers nearly completed trade with Saints before making roster move
The Pittsburgh Steelers had to begin to determine the final roster for the 2025 season after the team played its final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday. This is always a tough time of year for all 32 organizations across the NFL, as difficult roster decisions need to be made. One of those that the Steelers had to make came at punter, as the franchise had to decide between Cameron Johnston and Corliss Waitman for the starting job. On Monday, Pittsburgh made the move to release Johnston, which meant that Waitman had won the starting punting job in Pittsburgh. This was a bit of a surprise as it felt like most fans believed Johnston would win the job, but the two had a stark difference in what they were being paid. Waitman made significantly less, and the production from the two players was not all that different. Before releasing Johnston, Pittsburgh seemed to shop their punters around the league as the franchise looked to trade one of them. According to Adam Schefter, a deal almost got done with the New Orleans Saints. Fans wanted to see the organization find a way to move its extra specialists for additional draft capital. The Steelers probably felt comfortable starting either Johnston or Waitman at punter, so whichever one could bring in more value in a trade was going to be dealt. A trade didn't materialize, and Johnston was released. Had Pittsburgh and New Orleans come to an agreement on a deal, it is hard to imagine the Steelers would have been able to bring in anything higher than a sixth or seventh round pick for the punter. However, all draft capital is good. Both Waitman and Johnston are good enough to be starters in the NFL, but no team carries two punters. The Steelers were able to save money by releasing Johnston, and Waitman is due roughly $2 million less than the former Steeler. Play certainly factored into the decision to release Johnston, but it seems like it was mainly a business decision as Pittsburgh was able to create some more flexibility against the cap. Waitman filled in for Johnston after the punter suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 1, and played well throughout the rest of the year.
Cowboys waive fan favorite UDFA wide receiver despite strong preseason
The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up for the start of the regular season by doing the hardest thing every team has to go through after the preseason. Roster cuts are never easy, and the decisions that are made can be tough for everyone, including the fanbase. On Tuesday, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Cowboys are waiving UDFA wide receiver Traeshon Holden. Holden became a fan favorite during training camp. It seemed every day, Holden was making a big play on the practice field. However, it appears the Cowboys are okay with moving in a different direction, as the team does have depth at the position heading into the 2025 season. The Cowboys traded for wide receiver Jonathan Mingo last season, who will be starting this year, injured. But it's fair to say the team has more trust in Mingo than the rookie Holden. Holden spent time with Alabama and Oregon during his college career. Playing at that level in the college game means he knows how to attack the big moments. There's no doubt that Holden will receive interest from other teams on the waiver wire. Cowboys fans have to be hoping that another NFC East team doesn't land him. Green Bay Packers: Jordan Love Says No to Potential Nickname After Surgery
The Green Bay Packers have a tough assignment right away in the upcoming 2025 NFL season, as they are scheduled to lock horns with the Detroit Lions in Week 1 at Lambeau Field. With Jordan Love running the show from under center for the Packers, Green Bay fans are hoping that the team will have a great start to the campaign, something that did not happen in 2024, when Matt LaFleur’s squad lost its season opener to the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil. Before that showdown between the Lions and the Packers in Green Bay, Love went on an interview with “Kay Adams on the Up Adams Show with Kay Adams.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter) that promoted the interview, Adams wrote the following as a caption: “I always leave a chat with Jordan Love completely impressed. Please watch comment. He’s the terminator. He’s dialed in. He IS a Packer.” In the interview itself, Adams asked Love about the nickname directly. “Are you the terminator?” Adams asked. “No, why do you say that?” Love responded. Adams thought it was an apt nickname for the former Utah State Aggies star QB after his quick recovery from a seemingly minor thumb surgery. Can the Green Bay Packers end the Lions’ dominance in the matchup? The Packers won 11 games and suffered six losses in 2024. Two of those losses came at the hands of the Lions. Detroit beat the Packers in Week 9 at Lambeau Field, 24-14, and then again in Week 14 at Ford Field via a 34-31 score. Green Bay has struggled to win against the Lions over the last few years. In fact, the Packers have won just once in their last seven meetings with Detroit. Still, the Packers should love their chances to beat the Lions in Week 1. Green Bay is favored in that contest at the moment by 1.5 points as of this writing (per Covers).
