Real Madrid tell Xabi Alonso to get rid of the egos in the club

Real Madrid are undergoing a cultural reset, and Xabi Alonso has been given full power to lead the transformation. According to MARCA, the club has informed Alonso that they will back him no matter what — even if it means discarding big names to restore team unity.

Rodrygo already out the door

The first major casualty? Rodrygo Goes. The Brazilian winger, once seen as a long-term attacking pillar, has already been told he can leave the club. He’s been benched repeatedly by Alonso, and his performances have dropped off — a reflection of deeper problems.

Rodrygo, like several others, has struggled to press and fight with the same intensity. Too many forwards, too many egos, and not enough hunger. That’s a formula Xabi Alonso is working hard to eliminate.

Mbappé’s arrival changed everything

The catalyst for this ego imbalance is clear: Kylian Mbappé. The French superstar arrived with a European Golden Boot and the blessing of Florentino Pérez. But his presence has thrown off the balance of Madrid’s attack.

Rather than adapting, Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo have regressed — no longer pressing with the same vigor, looking over their shoulders instead of looking forward. Even though Mbappé himself has ego issues and doesn’t always press, he’s Perez’s man. That doesn’t mean he’s immune, though.

Vinicius could be next

Even Vinicius Jr., Real Madrid’s icon over the past three seasons, is now walking a tightrope. Once the leader of the line and the club’s emotional engine, Vinicius is no longer guaranteed a starting spot. His dip in intensity has been noted — and if it continues, Alonso could phase him out just like Rodrygo.

Alonso is prioritizing players who work for the team over those who rely on star power alone. The pressing system, the discipline, and the collective fight are non-negotiable now.

Alonso’s new leaders: Arda and Gonzalo

It’s no coincidence that the players Alonso is promoting are Arda Güler and Gonzalo García — young, hungry, and ego-free. Gonzalo has already emerged as a surprise breakout star at the Club World Cup, while Arda is earning praise for his energy and team-first mentality.

Alonso is using them to set a new tone for the squad — one where effort and unity matter more than name value.

Mbappé could be next if his ego grows

While Mbappé currently has the club’s full backing, he’s not invincible. If his personality disrupts Alonso’s system, Madrid will not hesitate to act. The club has made it clear: Xabi Alonso is now the main personality, and the coach will be protected in any future conflict.

A new Madrid is being built

This is about more than just personnel — it’s a philosophical overhaul. Real Madrid are done catering to superstar egos. The message from the top is simple: buy in or move on.

Alonso is being trusted to lead a culture change the club feels is long overdue. And if he succeeds, Madrid will emerge not just with a better team, but a stronger identity — forged in discipline, unity, and ruthless clarity.
